Apr. 23, 2005 My father was released from prison on Tuesday. He didn't have anywhere to go, so the state sent him to the PIP shelter. Now, I'm not quite sure what PIP means, but I do know that it's one of the most dangerous place in the city. In the three days he's been there, there have been two heroin overdoses and one stabbing. Three bodies have been taken out in three days. Now, I'm worried about my father, I won't deny that. In fact, I talked to his brother today and it's so bad that he is trying to get my father up to Vermont so he can live safely and quietly. This article isn't about that however, it's about the PIP shelter itself. The PIP shelter is there for people who are homeless, but it's mainly occupied by prostitutes and drug addicts. It's a violent and dangerous place with no police help and very little state help. There are mice everywhere and it's overcrowded. Why is this? Why does a society that complains about the homelessness problem, the drug problem, and the prostitution problem fail to give these people a safe and secure place to sober up? Why are they not given a chance? After the fire, I was given numerous opportunities to go to various family shelters in the area. These are safe places for single mothers and their children, and while I didn't necessarily accept the idea, there are many people who do. What kind of society do we live in where not everyone is given this kind of help? Is it because we are dealing with the underbelly of what mankind has to offer? The people that no one wants to think about unless there is a charity ball or an election coming. I want to know why. What gives anyone the right to decide the fate of these people? You can't complain about the problem if you're not going to help solve it. And that's pretty much all I have to say on this subject, thank you. ------------ About the author L.J.
