A New Pope: Benedict XVI

By Amanda Baker
Apr. 19, 2005

Pope Benedict XVI was elected today on the 19th of April 2005.

This date which holds much history, for the United States of America, has another thing to add on a global historic nature. This date where a bomb went off infront of a Federal Building in Oklahoma killing hundreds of people. A date where federal employees went into the Waco compound to save the Branch Davidian's from David Koresh. They saved no one from that man but helped him go to... you pick the location.

Maybe the world needed the happy news today that a pope has been elected.

As a Catholic I morned the passing of the greatest pope in my lifetime. Pope John Paul II was a wise man who brought a caring feeling to a cold aristocracy of the church. He was as man who hide from the Nazis, who occupied his home of Poland, to study to become a priest. He fought for his convictions. Pope John Paul II through out his life did what he knew in his heart to be right.

The new pope on the other hand, was born before Hitler came to power. He was a youth during Hitler's rise to power.

I looked up his biography being curious about the new papal leader.

This is a direct quote from that site- "at the age of 16 he was, along with the rest of his class, drafted into the Flak or anti- aircraft corps. He went into basic training for the Wehrmacht infantry in November of 1944. In 1945 he was interned in a POW camp as a German soldier."

He became a priest a few years after his release.

I can see this pope is a man who was killing American and European pilots in World War II. He probably repented for his sins but to make a man who fought for Hitler a pope makes my gut turn over and want to retch.

Maybe God's plan is blind. Maybe this is the way the Cardinal's are saying that there are too many people of color in our church and not enough white people. Maybe...I don't know.

Because I don't know, I will leave it to God. He must know. Doesn't he.
