Apr. 13, 2005 Video games are evolving into more than just a simple hedgehog or a stereotypical Italian plumber saving princesses. I was digging around my collection of video games and noticed the game Manhunt by Rockstargames. Manhunt is a survival horror game in which you play the character of James Earl Cash a convict that was sentenced to death, but somehow he stayed alive during the procedure. He is then greeted by the “villian” of the game Mr. Starkwheather, who has planned for Cash to be the host of Starkwheather’s various snuff films. One by one you kill thugs and low life’s who have a bounty for your head. The kills are fantastic, but there were a lot of inspiration for this game. One in particular is in one level you have to somehow kill a big hulking man in a hockey mask that looks identical to the one Jason Voorhees wears in the Friday the 13th series. I began to ponder. What if we had a Friday the 13th game in the style of Manhunt, but with the freedom capacity of a Grand Theft Auto? My mouth began to water. Here is my idea. You can either play Jason or a camp counselor, the choice is yours. The setting would obviously be Camp Crystal Lake in which Jason calls home. Unlike the original Nintendo game in which was 2D, this game will play like GTA as far as freedom to explore is concern. Jason can explore anywhere from the docks, the lake, the woods, the cabins, anywhere you want to go you can go there. The day can change to night and back again, in which would make it interesting because unlike GTA in which day and night change within minutes, day and night changes for this game will be longer; therefore, if you want to kill some horny kids at night, viola! You can. The killing spree for Jason will be various of characters. Males and females, camp counselors, teenagers, crazy old people that keeps telling people “They’re doomed,” and of course FBI agents (Hey, you got to give Jason some kind of risk or conflict). Here is the idea for the game. Let’s say you play Jason. You explore the camp trying to find your prey, and the prey can be at anywhere at anytime. The idea for the game is just an idea for an actual Friday the 13th plot line. Kill Kill Kill! Of course there should be some sort of storyline, maybe the kills can add points like Spider-Man 2 did when you saved people at random. However, Jason has many many ways to kill people with various weapons at three different levels or maybe four, just like Manhunt. But that’s not all. The victims should be AI friendly, in other words, they should be there own people. The victims should be able to swim (naked if possible), make love (because we know what happens when you have sex in a F13 movie) and do other sorts of things including fighting Jason. Of course we have to give Jason some sort of life meter to a point where he can die, because the game would be boring if there wasn’t risk in dying yourself. The assortment of kills should reflect on the movies, but also they should bring new ways to kill just for fun. For example, if a couple are making love in their bed, you can kill them with a spear through both of them. Of course you can hide in a cabin and wait patiently for someone to come and then kill them. Kinda like a stalker or sniper waiting for the prey to come to them. Like Manhunt you can spook the victims into coming your way with a brick or a bottle. In the Friday the 13th game you can spook them by pressing a button on the controller and bellowing out a “Ch Ch Ch Ha Ha Ha”. The kids will start saying things like “Brian? Is that you?” And then when they pass you, you can kill them with an axe, machete, etc. Of course you can even spook the kids by nailing your victims to doorways or trees or anything else, just like in the movies. Imagine a camp counselor is spooked because he heard something, he opens the door and there is his friend’s head in the closet, the counselor screams, but as he turns around...SPLAT! The weapons should have an assortment. Machete, axe, hammer, sickle, the bone saw from F13 pt7, knife, pitchfork, and any other weapon that has made a cameo appearance in a Friday the 13th films, and you can use your hands. Of course there should be blood, breasts, and lots of kills. I like the idea that you can explore anywhere around camp and so can the victims. You can hear the victims walking in the woods chatting with one another, maybe even the boy trying to spook his girlfriend about how there were murders in the woods years ago. Yeah, prove him right with a machete to the face, and then finish his girlfriend up as well. This was more like a pitch than an actual column, hopefully someone in the videogame industry will take in consideration or maybe capitalize on this idea. Or hopefully they will take my idea of a Friday the 13th game and run with it. I won’t ask anything more than just make it and make it really good. ------------ About the author Eric Schomburg: Useless-Knowledge Columnist of the year 2004.
