Terri Schiavo: Nothing But Political Opportunity [Brian H. Darling]

By Robert Paul Reyes
Apr. 9, 2005

Brian H. Darling, legal counsel to Republican Senator Mel Martinez of Florida, admitted authoring the memo that declared Terri Schiavo's horrendous situation "a great political issue" for the GOP.

Darling didn't see Terri Schiavo as a woman in a dire predicament; he considered her a political pawn.

Is this former gun industry lobbyist an aberration, or is he representative of the moral rot within the Republican Party?

Unfortunately, Darling's cynical assessment was shared by many of his colleagues, including Tom DeLay, Jeb Bush and President George W. Bush. Republicans jumped on the "Culture of Life" bandwagon like flies on dung.

As the infamous memo brazenly stated, Republicans saw Schiavo's plight as an opportunity to pander to their evangelical base - "pro-lifers" who viewed the angry fight between Mrs. Schiavo's parents and her husband as a proxy battle over abortion.

These vultures viewed Terri's feeding tube not as a medical instrument to provide nourishment to a patient, but as a political tool to energize their base. They never had Schiavo's interest at heart, they were thinking solely in terms of political expediency.

Asking politicians for support and advice in a moral dilemma, is like hiring a prostitute to teach sexually responsible behavior to your children.

Politicians should play no role in right to life/right to die cases; make a living will so that these vultures won't be hovering over your body if you ever find yourself in Schiavo's predicament.
