Apr. 9, 2005 Sesame Street's beloved blue, furry monster lived up to his moniker by greedily gobbling one cookie after another. When I was a tot I would imitate the "Cookie Monster" by tearing open a package of Oreo cookies and cramming my face with the earthly delights. No more. The "Cookie Monster" has been emasculated. The formerly fearsome monster is now a wimpy shill for healthy eating. His "C is for cookie" song has been replaced with a new song -- "A Cookie Is a Sometimes Food." God, what is the world coming to? That's like Lil' Kim singing, "I'm a sometimes slut." Program producers say with the rise in childhood obesity, "Sesame Street" is focusing on teaching kids about healthy foods. The producers should focus on producing kid- friendly entertainment. Kids don't want to see a Cookie "Monster" who daintly nibbles on one cookie at a time. Free "Cookie Monster". Let him revert to his old ways of munching tons of cookies. ------------ About the author: Robert Paul Reyes is a columnist for the Lynchburg Ledger.
