Apr. 9, 2005 I work at a restaurant. My job is to serve you food. You, my client, is morbidly obese. Seeing this, I refuse to serve you food. You see, God told me that gluttony was a sin so I am doing God's will by not serving you food, right? Now, say I am a pharmacist. I read my Bible at night and I go to church on Sunday. I believe that anyone using a contraceptive is "killing babies," even if they were recently raped. You come in and you were recently raped, beaten, and left for dead. However, I choose to not give you emergency contraception because I do not believe it is moral to stop a pregnancy. Therefore I will not fill your perscription. Does this sound like a world you want to live in? Well, aside from the first example, which never happened, the second one is becoming more and more frequent in this country and needs to stop. I applaud responsible adults that see that using a contraceptive when they have sex or want to treat acne (something that it can also be used for). I believe they are being intelligent in understanding that it takes a lot to raise a child. If they do not want one right now but when they feel they are ready, well, good for them. However, when a pharmacist puts their morals onto a woman, then we have a problem. You see, it is not their place to put their ideals on someone else, just their professional skills in filling prescriptions. They are there to understand possible allergic reactions or figure out that a doctor gave them the wrong drug for their ills. It is not their place to object to someone's lifestyle. Lawmakers across this country now get to deal with another stupid decision that wastes valuable legislative time dealing with some ridiculous issue instead of doing their job. Did you know that it costs tens of thousands of dollars to deal with every hot button issue in this country? Pharmacists, I respect your profession but keep your religion off women. That's my prescription for a better America. ------------ About the author: Nicholas Olson is a long-time journalist who has been a columnist at his college newspaper and is currently a military journalist.
