Apr. 9, 2005 Star Wars, an epic journey that has spanned three decades, is coming to the next phase of its existance in May. The next movie is the ending of the pre-series of three movies explaining how Anakin Skywalker becomes the dreaded person; Darth Vader. And I will be there to see it! Yup, I am a Star Wars fan! I love the art of all of the movies starting with: Episode Four, The New Hope. Now I am going to age myself once again by writing about my first experience with that movie. I was sitting in my father's beat up truck watching the silver screen light up with pictures. My dad took me to a drive-thu outside Poughkeepsie, NY. The year was 1977. The movie started with the "Star Wars" title fading backwards. I didn't understand what the words on the screen were, at that time, but I was captured by the first shots from the Star Destroyer that were being fired on the Princess's ship. I would understand this much later in life. I got bored and started to play with a doll my dad had brought for me. But then the movie moved inside, people talked, the music boomed. My attention was hooked. I watched mesmerized by the pictures. But a scene came later when the princess shot into a garbage hold. I crawled under the front seat of the pick up truck when the monster touch Luke's leg. I could not get away from the moving pictures they were reflected on the window at the back of the cabin. The monster took Luke under the water. I screamed. My dad scooped me up in his lap and Luke's head came back up. Okay, normal people were not frightened by that scene but a two year old certainly was and that was me. I finished the movie on my Dad's lap. It is the first memory of going to see motion pictures for me. A good one. I stood in line for the next movie and the one after that. I watched and cheered with fellow Star Wars fans. This is an exciting time for people who love these movies. Star Wars changed motion pictures in so many ways. Each movie is a piece of art. I want to thank George Lucas for letting the world share in the broad world he created. A little entertainment helps in small ways, and makes great memories. Lastly, the next movie, Star Wars: Revenge of the Sith, should win a couple of best picture awards. A good example is the Lord of the Rings: Return of the King, it won when the two movies before it did not and should have. Star Wars: Revenge of the Sith is ending an era, so it needs to be awarded. Titanic won an award for best picture and everybody knew the ending of that movie before it was released, so why not Star Wars too? ------------ About the author: Being a full time writer is the hardest job that I have tried.
