American Flags Should Not Be Lowered To Honor Pope John Paul II

By Robert Paul Reyes
Apr. 8, 2005

As millions of pilgrims crowd Rome to honor Pope John Paul II, his death is raising questions of separation of church and state in the United States.

As a "mark of respect" to the pontiff, President George W. Bush ordered flags to be flown at half mast.

The president's order not only tears down the wall of separation between church and state, but it appears to endorse Roman Catholicism over other religions.

Will Dubya order flags to be flown at half mast when Jerry Falwell dies, or when any other major religious leader dies? If not, why not?

Pope John Paul II was a great man in many ways, but he was also the head of a homophobic and sexist organization. Why should feminists and homosexuals be expected to respect his Neanderthal teachings?

The flag represents our people and our ideals ; why should this symbol of democracy pay homage to a homophobic and patriarchal institution?

If Bush wanted to pay his respects to the pope, he should have said a prayer for him in the privacy of the White House. But to lower the flags at half mast for the pope is a travesty of everything that this country stands for.
