Apr. 7, 2005 Okay, okay, I admit it...I'm a loser. Yeah, I've lost a lot of weight. Some probably due to cancer (I'm not even going to dignify it with a capital letter.).Some because I just kinda eat hit and miss. I mean I might be asleep in the middle of the day and sitting at Denny's at 3, or 4 in the morning drinking coffee. I spent 22 years working nights in a magazine bindery. My timetable got changed by my work schedule. I still work at night. Be that as it may, I'm not talking about my weight. I'm talking politics. I ran lately for the Salem Township Road Commissioner position as a Republican.(What's that whooping and clapping and cartwheeling sounds coming from Libland?)I know some are not gonna think that's a bad thing. I got about a third as many votes as the other guy and a lot of people would think I got slammed. Think again. First, this is a highly Democratic area. Second, due to my job, I sleep when most people are at work and work when people want to eat supper. I'm not allowed to campaign while delivering pizza. Third, I'm on chemo every other week and it takes a few days to get back up to speed. So, basically, I didn't even actively campaign and I still did better than I thought. True, my opponent was the incumbent and had signs proclaiming 26 years of experience. I've driven over the roads 15 months as a cabbie and since October as a delivery driver. Where was that experience? I didn't even have any snazzy little yard cards. I didn't have his resources. The guy is the incumbent. I'm not a rich Democrat like a lot of the nebobs around here. So while I lost the election I still think I did well enough to say I won a moral victory. Unfortunately, the real loser wasn't me; it was the people in Salem Township who have to put up with the next few years driving over 26 years of bad experience. So, yeah, it's sad to think the guy would brag about that many years of doing a lousy job. I wouldn't have bragged. I guess you gotta think the only one who did win was him. Everyone else lost. Now, if you excuse me, I've got a lot of sour grapes here and need to learn how to make some sweet wine out of them.
