You Can Do It!

By David H. Donaghe

I know most of you have seen those Adam Sandler movies where he is speaking to a crowd and some hairy guy in the background yells, “You can do it!” I’m that hairy guy in the background, because You Can Do It. You can write that novel you’ve been working on, and someone will publish it. You don’t have to self publish. I know, it happened to me. There are many good reasons why people self publish, but receiving too many rejection slips is not one of them. Maybe it’s time to look at your work. Is it the best you can do? Don’t expect to submit a 200,000-word manuscript to a publisher and get him to bite, if you’ve never published anything before,

For me it took baby steps. First, I published a short story, which won first place in The California Writer’s Clubs short story contest. Then I published one in an on line Journal. I sent a zombie story into The Living Dead Press and the editor contacted me on the phone. He like my story and wanted to publish it in an anthology. After our phone conversation, he accepted a vampire story for another anthology. He liked my work, so I kept sending in stories. While I was getting my stories published in anthologies by, The Living Dead Press, I sent in a submission for my science fiction novel, Tale Spinner to Otherworld publications. They responded by saying that they were booked up for that year, but they wanted to keep my submission and look at it again when they opened their submissions for the coming year. A year passed and they opened up their submissions again. I sent them an email reminding them that they still had my submission. They sent me a reply saying that they wanted to publish my book. Otherworld Publications released Tale Spinner on April 22nd 2011. The Living Dead Press editor and I discussed putting all of my short stories together and making a book. He released, Monroe’s Paranormal Investigations in February 2011. Both books are now available at Amazon.com.

All it takes is perseverance, a positive mental attitude and not taking a no for an answer. When I would receive a rejection slip for a submission, I would read it quickly and put it away. Then I would take it out later and read it carefully. If the editor left a comment, explaining why he rejected my work, I would use that as a learning tool to make my work better and I would keep on writing. If you think you can’t, you won’t, but if you keep a positive attitude and tell yourself, I am a published writer, it will happen. You can get a hundred Nos, but it only takes one yes. When you get a rejection slip, add it to the pile and keep sending your work in for publication, because if you know you can, you will: You Can Do It!
