Do You Schwooggie?

By Alexey Braguine
June 24, 2011

A few years ago, a friend I will call Frank had been unemployed for over a year. He still had not recovered from a messy divorce. Three days earlier, someone stole his car. As he went to bed he thought the option of suicide was rather attractive.

"Schwooggie,"

Frank opened his eyes. It was still dark. His eyes roved the bedroom. Who had said that?

Schwooggie. It had been his own voice that roused him. Fully awake he got out of bed, went into the kitchen and made coffee.

Schwooggie? Why would he say that, he had never said that word before. He inhaled the aroma of coffee and poured into a mug. It was quiet at this hour. He raised the mug as if toasting someone and said, "schwooggie." He shook his head, the word had a ring to it. It was unique. Probably no one in world history ever said schwooggie. Not Shakespeare, not Benjamin Franklin, Nor Mark Twain or Dumas, not even Tolstoy.

He slurped his coffee loudly. "ha, ha, ha." This was funny. He was the inventor of a word never conceived by anyone. Einstein never said schwooggie.

What was the meaning of the word? Not to worry, the meaning would reveal itself. In the bathroom, he showered and shaved the week old stubble. At 07:15 sharp Frank stepped out onto the street at the same time that his neighbor Zack did.

"Schwooggie," Frank said.

"Huh?" Zack gave him a quizzical look.

"Can I bum a ride downtown?"

"Sure, get in."

Forty five minutes later, in a coffee shop, Frank went through the adds in the paper. The Title Vice President Sales caught his eye. "Schwooggie." The company hiring was just down the street.

Frank entered and told the receptionist he wanted to see the company CEO. And what was it about?

"Schwooggie."

"What?"

"Just tell the boss it is about Schwooggie and it is urgent."

A few minutes later, a secretary ushered Frank into the CEO´s office. In half an hour Frank had warmed up to his subject and was telling the CEO, "Applying the schwooggie principle is the only way to go. For example let everyone off one hour early today and tomorrow watch their performance. They will get the schwooggie waves and schwooggie right back. Schwooggie is about give and take, cooperation, honesty, loyalty, friendship, good will towards everyone. It is all those things together but unspoken."

That afternoon, after a long lunch with the CEO, Frank climbed into Zack´s car. Zack asked, "How was your day?"

"Good, I invented a verb."
