July 27, 2011 "And he said unto them, Ye are they which justify yourselves before men; but God knoweth your hearts: for that which is highly esteemed among men is abomination in the sight of God." (Luke 16:15 KJV) Jesus spoke these words to the Pharisees who were standing by; listening to him as he taught the people who had gathered around him. Jesus had spoken of serving two masters and the conflicts presented in such situations. The Pharisees (already priests) loved the money brought to them by the trusting populace more than they loved God and the law. Jesus knew their true hearts well. This brings my thoughts to the present. Modern religion “esteems” a great many things God opposes. There are religions that esteem the “marriage” of homosexuals; completely against the biblical admonition that marriage is between “one man and one woman”. Some modern religions base this belief solely on humanistic principle. They believe as long as “love” is involved in the union then any union can be blessed of God. These modern religions have claimed God’s position. Their humanistic rules have become more important than actual biblical law. Men “esteem” welfare. The unemployment check has somehow become a gift from God. Never mind that a man is supposed to work for his largess. It is true that the bible has rules for the care of those who cannot fend for themselves, but the able-bodied are never exempt from sowing. No man should be permitted to reap any benefit if he hasn’t sown something worthwhile. Men “esteem” murder. There are many men and some women who languish in prison who should have been put to death for their murders. They are permitted years upon years of appeal while their victims rot in their graves and evidence grows more useless with age. Witnesses to these terrible crimes, in time, die before the murderers who lay claim to free health care and regular meals without the stress of having to work; increasing the possibility of parole or outright commutation of death sentences. Too, men “esteem” abortion: a more heinous form of murder. Here, the innocent are randomly killed for convenience or for the supposed necessity of “harvesting” embryonic stem cells which have still not been proven to be more effective than adult stem cells in medical research. Men will permit a child to be almost completely birthed before cutting open the child’s skull to vacuum the brains into a sink. Men will allow children born alive from “botched” abortions to die; suffocating on operating room tables; cold and unattended. Men “esteem” the creation of “bastard” children. The rise in the numbers of single-parent homes are putting severe drains on programs designed to keep such lopsided “families” from falling into poverty. The scriptures do contain instructions for the care of widows and the fatherless. The assumption was a loss of something that once was. Nowadays there is no loss. There is only the assumption that these children can be born and the government will take the place of the irresponsible “father”. There are television programs extolling the virtues of single-parenthood. There is no accountability expected from any of the men who have taken sexual advantage. For every one of these situations there are men who will justify the more terrible result. The excuses will be weak. The excuses will be based in selfishness, excess and lust. The excuses will always be for the supposed benefit of mankind, but the excuses will always be to the detriment of the innocent. The Gospel of Luke, Chapter 16, contains the Lord’s story of Lazarus and the rich man. The story is valuable in that Jesus explains the need for men to read and understand the prophets. After death it will be much too late to change your situation. Reading with understanding should lead one to “esteem” those ideals which are esteemed by God. It is a choice every man is admonished to make in his present life. ------------ Email Skip Toomaloo:
