Jan. 6, 2011 I don’t normally laugh at people in pain but when the pain is self-inflicted I show little pity. I had more than a chuckle at a Foxnews.com blurb of an article found in the “Christian Post” about Atheism’s latest attempt to awaken their movement’s sleepers. It is in the form of a billboard advertisement. Quoting: “The Huntsville ad -- produced by the American Atheists -- displays the message "You know they're all scams" alongside pictures of religious symbols, such as Islam's crescent moon and star, the cross and the Jewish star, according to the Christian Post.” One of the greatest chapters of scripture comes from Paul’s first letter to the churches in Corinth. Chapter 15 of First Corinthians is Paul’s testimony of the Gospel, the resurrection, and the foolishness of those who rejected the eyewitness accounts of the resurrected Christ; Paul himself a personal witness. But you have to love Paul. He was never afraid to give voice to his beliefs because they were fully his personal experiences. Paul wrote: “12Now if Christ be preached that he rose from the dead, how say some among you that there is no resurrection of the dead? 13But if there be no resurrection of the dead, then is Christ not risen: 14And if Christ be not risen, then is our preaching vain, and your faith is also vain. 15Yea, and we are found false witnesses of God; because we have testified of God that he raised up Christ: whom he raised not up, if so be that the dead rise not. 16For if the dead rise not, then is not Christ raised: 17And if Christ be not raised, your faith is vain; ye are yet in your sins. 18Then they also which are fallen asleep in Christ are perished. 19If in this life only we have hope in Christ, we are of all men most miserable. 20But now is Christ risen from the dead, and become the firstfruits of them that slept. 21For since by man came death, by man came also the resurrection of the dead.” (1 Corinthians 15:12-21 KJV) Paul is in wonder here because Jesus certainly did rise from the dead. There were many witnesses to the fact and they readily testified of what they had seen. If Christ wasn’t raised then why are we all out here preaching that? We are vain guys. (They sure weren’t in it for money or even personal glory.) Preaching is vain, faith is vain if Christ is not risen. Those in their graves are dead, dead, dead and all the rest of us are most miserable if there is no resurrection! “But now is Christ risen…!” Imagine that! And what of the Atheists who don’t believe in God and the resurrection? Well, those poor fools must be even more miserable, and we all know that true misery loves company; hence the billboard ad and its attempt to smoke out more Atheists to raise a bigger stink (and hopefully send more money for the cause perhaps?) That sounds more like the true scam. Now, let me be fair. The Atheists are not discussing true faith. They are discussing religions. All religions are targeted by the billboard ad and Atheists say all religions are “scams”. Well, besides the fact that nothing is ever a fact when “ALL” are lumped into the same lump with the singular exception that All Atheists are fools (The fool says in his heart there is no God!); Atheists do have a point. Many of the world’s religions are built on money (a god) or some bit of foolishness that would call god a tree, or the sun, or the moon or some animal. Some world religions would have you slap yourself silly with cords wrapping shards of glass till blood dripped down your face. Some religions would cut off your head for blasphemy or an arm or hand for theft. Some religions tell you women are no better than cattle or that black men are inferior to white or white men inferior to black. Some religions place mere men forward as icons to be worshipped and one religion will tell you there are no gods at all. But have no fear. For as screwed up as many of the world’s religions are Jesus overcomes all of that. He see their hypocrisies and pulls individuals out of all of these; showing them the errors; correcting them and helping each into a life of pure faith. Isn’t that great? (Yeah, I know, Atheists don’t think that’s cool. But they’ll get over that one day.) The bigger point here is that Paul, Peter, John and the rest of the Apostles were not preaching ANY religion. They were preaching what was known to be true. “That Christ died according to the scriptures; was buried, but rose again three days later according to the scriptures.” The next point to be made is “which scriptures”? Why that would be the Old Testament scriptures of the Jewish prophets who were given all the information they required, throughout the several centuries, to be able to identify the Messiah when he appeared on the scene. Those who followed the words of the prophets SAW. Those that were more steeped in the traditional religious trappings of men DID NOT SEE. And that is the ultimate problem with “religions”. Men have put their fat fingers all over the words of the prophets; including all their simpleton laws about how to pray, where to pray, how much money to put in church coffers, whose ring to kiss and blah, blah, blah ad nausea. I don’t blame Atheists for being turned away from all those man-garnered asininities. But Paul wrote about that, right up front in his Letter to the Romans. So Atheists need their billboards reeking one-up-man-ship; swearing to us they have had the truth since 1963. We people of true faith in the Living Christ can chuckle at that because we’ve had the truth since the resurrection over 2000 years ago. But too, we can laugh with the Atheists about the foibles of religions that do not preach the Christ and have modified “religion” to mean whatever the latest fads are these days. I suppose agreement between True Christians and Atheists was bound to happen someday. ------------ To Contact Mr. McCrae email: macswordv@hotmail.com
