Sept. 3, 2010 We have all grown up hearing the story about crying wolf. Commander of the International Security Assistance Force (ISAF) in Afghanistan, General Petraeus has heard it too and is very careful not to do it. However his spokesmen do come out with repeat versions of misleading information. The latest, was a press release dated August 25 in which ISAF spokesman, General Joseph Blotz, claimed that a Taliban leader, Mullah Niamat, has told his troops chances of winning the war were poor. The reason being increasing resentment of the Taliban among the civilian population. This claim is so farfetched that not one of the news organizations it was given to, ran with it. Meanwhile, at another level we get a completely different picture. A few weeks ago I wrote on these pages that the Marines in Marjah were stuck. Because of this, the Kandahar operation has been postponed indefinitely. Here is some information gathered by the International Council on Security (ICOS), A highly respected organization based in London. ICOS interviewed 522 people in Helmand and Kandahar Provinces, 97 of which in Marjah. In Marjah, 88 of the 97 felt the Taliban controlled the area occupied by the Marines. Only 9 perceived the government was in control. When asked if NATO was good for the people, only one of the 97 interviewees thought it was good. The rising number of American casualties in the last week confirm that the Afghan population is siding more and more with the Taliban.
It is impossible to win a war with falsehoods delivered to the press. The problem with people issuing falsehoods will eventually believe them themselves.
