The Ennunment

By Thomas Keyes
Nov. 30, 2010

In my mini-biography at the bottom of this page, you will see that I have written a book called The Ennunment. I invented the word ennunment, with its obvious meaning, so that my title would be unique. The Ennunment is an epic poem about nunhood in a distant galaxy. It consists of 10 cantos of 800 lines each, written in rhymed iambic pentameter, and would come to about 300 or 350 pages if published in traditional book form. I use archaisms, modern English and postmodern English, but the poem contains no obscenity, profanity or slang. It does get a little racy in a couple of places though. The whole poem may be read here:

In the Middle Ages and later, a recurrent theme in history and fiction, down here on Earth, was the king who, tiring of his queen, took another queen, shutting the first queen up in a convent to get her out of the way. The story line of The Ennunment is a variation on this theme.

The galaxy is Ti. The planet is Nya. The kingdom is Ung. The capital city is Mecnita.

Queen Udi is the regnant Queen of Ung, so her husband, Vocno, is not king but only prime minister. A brilliant, gorgeous goddess of a lady named Ajinblambia comes from Mli, the moon, to Mecnita, where she woos Udi and sweeps her off her feet. Udi names Ajinblambia King of Ung. To get rid of Vocno, the ladies have his sex changed at Shrongmoil Medical Center and commit him to Defdefa Convent as a novice nun with the name of Sister Rogizlenia. At Defdefa Convent, he is under the tutelage of Abbess Olezconia, and eventually becomes her pet.

Vocno-Rogizlenia does well at Defdefa Convent, setting up a school to teach the other nuns astronomy, illumination of manuscripts and needlework. They all learn eagerly, and the community sells objects of art at its bazaars to wealthy ladies in the vicinity, earning goodly sums of money for the convent. Seeing these accomplishments, Olezconia decides she can now allow herself a one-year sabbatical.

During this period, a powerful black nun, named Sister Mbambo, takes over the convent, beating and terrifying the other nuns, but they finally manage to toss a lariat about her and drag her out to the road, for the sheriff to find.

Otherwise, things proceed well. Sister Vocno-Rogizlenia wins recognition from the Museum of Mecnita for an illuminated text on astronomy that he and the other nuns have prepared. As a token of appreciation, Ajinblambia, the lady King, grants new lands to the convent and names the convent school a royal college. Building on the added lands and enrolling a bevy of new nuns, Vocno-Rogizlenia leads the convent to a new plateau of prosperity. When Olezconia returns from her sabbatical, she is so pleased that she decides to retire, naming Vocno-Rogizlenia abbess in her place. Now Vocno calls himself Olezconia II.

Vocno-Olezconia's first assignment is to fly to Ufzu, a kingdom on the moon, and build convents there. He and his lunar patroness, Queen Shandra, visit Liscarn, another lunar kingdom, where Vocno insulted the prophetess Hennamarn some years earlier. Hennamarn seizes and confines Vocno-Olezconia and tortures him, but finally he is released.

Vocno-Olezconia returns to Ufzu just as war is breaking out with Vrandz, another lunar kingdom, but leads Ufzu to victory in the manner of Joan of Arc, whereupon Shandra makes a heroine of him.

Vocno-Olezconia then founds Carvanilli Convent on the moon, naming Sister Rijarli abbess, but Rijarli mutinies, declaring Carvanilli independent. When Vocno-Olezconia goes to Rijarli to address the problem, Rijarli shuts him up in a dungeon. Eventually, though, Ajinblambia, the lady King, hears of this and flies to the moon, rescuing Vocno-Olezconia.

Ajinblambia and Vocno-Olezconia return to Nya, the mother planet, and Vocno-Olezconia is dispatched to western Ub to convert the nomads there. They taunt and mock him pitilessly, but he finally enlists the sympathy of Vinja, Ajinblambia's cousin, who is building nuclear desalination plants in the region. She enables him to gain the respect of the nomads, and he founds Tantakoram Cloister there.

Vocno-Olezconia's next two convents, Osh, in eastern Ub, and Holy Armalissa's, in Mecnita, are founded much more peacefully. Finally though, Ajinblambia sends him to Fulumoa, an island in Ungonesia, to convert the giant savages that live there. The Fulus confine Vocno-Olezconia in a cow pasture, barefoot and wearing only a chemise. But Ajinblambia rescues him again, humiliating the Fulu leader, Chief Pokoka, in hand-to-hand combat.

Then Vocno-Olezconia founds Sambakang Convent on the site of a former savage shrine on Fulumoa. He extends his friendship to Karamela, a giant Fulu girl 13 years old. Karamela gradually gains the upper hand over Vocno-Olezconia and declares herself the abbess of Sambakang Convent, reducing Vocno-Olezconia to the status of slave girl and maid.

However, Queen Udi learns of this, flies down to Fulumoa, reprimands Karamela, and rescues Vocno-Olezconia. Taking him back to the glorious city of Mecnita, she finally arranges for Vocno-Olezconia to retire to an era of peace and contentment.

I had planned to write a second book, which I began, and which appears at the link, but I may abandon that idea.
