Good CEO Vs. Bad CEO

By Lin Lin

The other day, I overheard a true story that took place on November 1933. A week before thanksgiving, a factory was burned down. It would take at least 3 months to rebuild. Just overnight, more than 300 workers became jobless. Back then, people did not have unemployment benefits. Without income, hundreds families would go hungry, and worst of all, the Great Depression was at its full bloom. Finding a new job was a mission impossible. However, what happened next stunned everyone. Despite of the heavy loss, the factory owner did not abandon those employees. On the contrary, he provided them with 3 months full pay (using his own money), and he vowed to rebuild the factory so that all the workers would have a job to return to.

For a month that followed, the workers and their family members volunteered to labor on the ruins. They poured to the site day and night, using bare hands and everything they could find to tear down the broken walls and raise new. The cold weather and harsh working conditions did not damp their spirits or slow them down. They sweat together like a big family with the same goal in mind.

Days before Christmas, a brand new factory was completed. It stood tall and bright on the ground that was once indulged in a ruthless flame. With combined strength, a miracle was created. It was not done under any kind of pressure or by force. People give their best because of the good will they receive. It is called conscience. Kindness is repaid with loyalty. Selfishness only results in betrayal and abandonment.

In today world, we hardly hear these kind of heartwarming stories. Too many employers think only themselves in the time of crisis. They lay off people, freeze salary, call off Profit Sharing, and all possible employee benefits to cut down expenses, add more pressure to the existing staffs. To them, the hardworking, low-level employees are merely small sacrifices, expendable and unimportant. Their experiences, knowledge and skills mean little to the top executives. What they need the most is a manager who carries out their policy, and squeezes every drop of blood out of the employees. Sadly, with families to feed, bills to pay, many employees have little choice. They work under intense pressure, without laughter, enthusiasm or hope. As long as the unemployment rate remains high, their situation will not change.

Greed is not a bad thing entirely. As a matter of fact, we all have it. But if one’s excessive avarice hurts others, then it becomes a sin. Corporate Greed is one of the main reasons for the current economic downfall. It divides people, weakens leadership, and endangers the country. Important decisions are made base on self-interest. On the way of seeking wealth and power, many lose their conscience, and saddest of all, they see nothing wrong with it.

We often talk about the good old days, and hope that everything would go back to the way it was. The truth is that the good old days will not come back if people forget to love, trust, and give.
