Bullying And Education Options

By Julia Sherman

Many parents are facing an epidemic that just may pay a visit upon their house. Like A Pox upon your house of years ago, a new Pox is about to enter your home if you have school age children, especially high school aged kids. No I am not talking about lice, diseases or anything else like that. I am talking about bullying and Internet bullying.

With the recent increase in suicides (Four Teen Suicides At Mentor High School In Ohio abcnews.go.com/US/wireStory?id=11830215) due to it, it is time that one parent speaks up about alternatives that many parents simply don’t consider. Maybe they are afraid, maybe they feel it’s easier to send their kids out into that sea of monsters every day than face the choices that are out there.

You may be thinking to yourself, How dare I call the kids who bully monsters. Well I can because I have been there.

I survived it, I fought back with intellect and fists and the legal system. As a person who survived that caustic bullying that was so pervasive back in the 1970s, the school shootings of 1974 I can say I did it. I did with and without my parents help and that is why I chose to be a parent who would never let that happen.

First I beat the crap out of the girls whom bullied me, broke my glasses and my cheekbone and knocked a tooth loose. I fought back the girls who were punching, hitting, tearing, and scratching me and finally broke the nose of the cheerleader leader and ran home.

Then I went to the doctor had X rays taken and filed a police report of assault. Something that no one ever did in a school situation, let alone back in 1974. Finally I dropped out. I was 14.

First as a parent I have to say that it is my job my duty and, my love to protect and help my child as best as I can regardless of my own need.

Enough said on that statement. It is an all-encompassing statement that every parent takes on as soon as they decide to have a child. Protect at all costs.

And why then do parents choose to ignore and send their kids into that established catastrophe. And what is worse it is not at school, but also invades their home. Beats the heck out of me.

After hearing about the series of suicides at an Ohio school I screamed at the TV, you have choices open your eyes! Your child did not have to die because of your lack of looking for choices that are right in front of you.

And what choices do I speak of. Before I go on I can hear it now,

"I don’t have the time"

"I can’t",

"They have to have social interaction". Any of these sound familiar?

Social interaction leading to self-destruction is not proactive people. It is destructive.

After becoming a parent and watching in horror the news of teen suicides, Internet bullying and people literally having no self-governance or parental governance, it seemed to me that people are not looking for choices. In short the bullied kids are not being given choices. And that can lead to self-mutilation to gain attention and be taken out of that situation (hospitalization) or the catastrophic inevitable because the situation has become intolerable.

First stop and listen to your child. In effect listen to what your child is not saying that can be the key to what is really going on. Then look into alternatives to public /private school. And there are some great alternatives instead of sending your child back into the fray.

Consider home school, distance education or a Montessori school.

Is your child not worth these alternatives.

You do not have to be the home-schooler. There are many teachers and tutors that can handle the four hours of school that are needed and required, plus provide the testing and support services such as field trips and extra curricular needs. This prevents continued problems in the school and provides a focused education.

This also allows for more adult contact and a different look at things. Still concerned about the socialization process, these tutors and teachers can bring your child into jr. Olympics, VIP programs etc, things that carry weight into their adult lives.

Consider Distance education. There are a few excellent federally accredited completely college credit transferable programs that are out there. As a parent you don’t need to be the Harvard professor, taskmaster or for that matter a school marm. Distance education is self-explanatory, you just have to be available to help.

You can combine the best of both worlds, distance education with a tutor for two or three days a week. There are some Service providers and tutors/teachers that focus on getting a student finished with school and enjoying the world .It is also a protective education for those who are at risk for being a target.

Montessori schools are often more intuitive to the specifics of a person can do and work with that. No holding back, No nonsense. From K-college Montessori is there to bring your child’s ability to the forefront.

Bullying is a form of harassment or assault. Legally, Bullying is intent to assault, assault, harassment or other social crime. Evidence is your best defense as is a restraining order/order of protection. So installing tracking software on your home computer and all other computers, having copies of texts sent as documents as proof of harassment is key to acquiring evidence and proof of what is going on.

Facebook, myspace, even twitter seem to the most common places for harassment to take place. Addictive like anything else these two social web sites and more coming up are the most common and often anonymous ways to target the child. Explaining or often blocking the web sites are the most effective, albeit often argumentative method to stop the insanity. Screen capture to show intent, isp capture etc even photo of who is on webcam can be helpful. Now with skype/webcam conversations you can see who is doing the harassing online. Some bullies have gone s far as creating youtube threats.

It doesn’t matter where happens or how it happens the fact is it happens and will continue to happen,. The choice is to prevent your child from being a victim. And you have choices, choices that are open and available.

Keeping your child safe and preventing catastrophe is your responsibility. Your options are out there and you just need to look.
