Canada's Afghan Detainees Tortured?

By Mike Haran
May 2, 2010

There is at present an ongoing debate in Canada’s Parliament regarding the transfer of Afghan detainees to the Afghan security forces. There are allegations that upon transfer their Afghan prisoners are being routinely tortured. There is now a great gnashing of teeth and cries of recrimination from the opposition benches, the liberals aghast that such a transfers are possible. There is a call for documents pertaining to these transfers in order to ascertain whether Canada’s Prime Minister, Stephen Harper, knew before hand that these prisoners would be tortured; putting him the position of authorizing war crimes, the liberals hoping the furor will bring about an election, the parliamentary system allowing this in the case of a minority government. Even if this fails there is still an advantage to all of this for the liberals as hopefully it will bring down Harper's poll numbers, which at present are ten points or so above those of their nearest rivals, the liberals. I don’t know whether the expected drop failed to occur due to the sterling performance of Canada’s economy during the recession, the Canadian dollar now for the first time in decades on a par with the green back, or because the average guy doesn’t give a damn.

My views on the subject are that if a government is in danger if falling due to the implementing of torture by ones allies maybe it would be best not to intervene any where as except for a few places in Europe, the Americas, Australia and New Zealand all countries torture prisoners. The British seem to have got around the problem by building and manning their own prisons but this may give raise the problem of how to pay for them, after all you can’t always expect the electorate in these difficult times to be ready to pay the extra taxes. You could set a system in the host county where you would personally run a part of the economy in order to make sure it runs without corruption and a degree efficiency allowing for the paying for and running the prisons but then I guess you would need a high commissioner, white feather in the solar pith helmet and all so I guess that wouldn’t work.

Prisoners should not be abused; neither should there be a reason for war. Unfortunately this is not how the world works. Too bad the liberals are so hungry for power that they resort too this type of mud slinging. They could offer some alternatives but then they know that if they were in power they would probably do the same thing. I suppose the electorate are not so dumb as not to know this.

A cheap liberal shot analogous to the above must be the out cry over the Arizona state law requiring all police officers to question those they suspect of being in the country illegally. Today’s news (First of May) reports that an Arizona police officer is suffering gunshot wounds inflicted as he questioned a group suspected of illegally entering the country. Also involved is the importation of marijuana.
