May 22, 2010 “All the world's a stage, And all the men and women merely players: They have their exits and their entrances” We are a bemused lot; our lives entwined by many a relationship. Whether we grow with them or they ripen with us, is certainly difficult to answer. It is intriguing to note that relationships come in all shapes and sizes – in the form of family, friends, mentors, colleagues, pets, children, neighbors, acquaintances, and even inanimate objects (our prized possessions). Most relationships bear a name. A few unfortunate ones, nevertheless, choose to remain anonymous. However, each association whether good, not so good, or simply bad, is idiosyncratic. No man is an island and thus new relations befriend us as we walk the journey of life. With the passage of time, some of these acquaintances gradually seep into our being, spread roots, and grow to be an imperative element of our existence. Consciously or unconsciously, our lives become perfectly orchestrated to the fidelity of various relationships that we quiver even at the faintest thought of being left alone, forsaken by them. Since relations play a crucial part in nourishing and nurturing our lives, it is important to realize that it is not their infallibility but rather their altruism, sincerity, and fidelity that help them become “perfect” ties, capable of withstanding the test of time. In today’s world of technological invention and innovation, some believe that our digital cohorts such as cell phones and computers threaten to overshadow our human companions and thus relationships tend to take a back seat in our lives. The truth, however is, true relationships complete our world, adding colors and flavors to it. They provide sustenance to the dying values of integrity, solidarity, commitment, responsibility, tolerance, love, kindness, and reverence that are fast eroding in this cruel and dishonest world. Honest relations motivate us to stand tall in the midst of trials and tribulations, comfort us in sickness and pain, aid us to take success and failure in our stride and above all, encourage us to strive ahead and never give up on our faith. It is said that ties of love are not true until they are tested. While time plays a significant role in creating, healing and strengthening varied relations, ironically, some turn sour with time. It is then that our blissful worlds of oblivion collide with consciousness, hurling up untamed memories ensnared in the realms of time and space. We, like hapless souls, savor their sweetness and bitterness alike. Countless complexities arise as the once familiar and dear faces gradually drift away from us and struggle desperately to hide behind the mask of quaintness. Disheartening as it might be, some associations are fated to die young no matter how dearly we cling on to them. Our little susceptible worlds that had begun to orbit around them fall apart, unable to sustain themselves. And when cherished relationships begin to taste bitter, life becomes a grotesque fairytale.
Life is mystic. In unusual ways, it tutors man to live to tell the tale and ensures that the lesson is learnt well. Our moments of great emotional crisis herald moments of greater realizations. We mature. We comprehend the futility of trailing behind relationships that can never be or perhaps, were never our own. We painfully understand that the time is ripe to walk back and come home to those unsung relationships that have patiently waited for our return. It’s time to live in their afterglow.
