Vote No On Proposed Health Care Legislation

By Barbara Scheidel
Mar. 19, 2010

I am a registered Democrat; my husband is a registered Republican. And it doesn’t really matter what party we are registered in… I believe most people belong to a certain party because their parents belonged to that party and because of whatever was going on in the political scene or with specific candidates at that time they registered.

We vote for the person, not the party. I believe the majority of Americans vote for the person, not the party. So all of you elected to Congress need to stop playing with the mentality of gang members and start doing your job, which is to represent ALL of the people who live within the geographical area you represent, not just those people who belong to your party. Once you have been elected to Congress, you have two primary obligations: 1)vote according to the promises/pledges you made during the campaign regarding specific issues, and 2)on all other issues you should be voting according to what the majority of ALL the people in your district are indicating they favor. If, after carefully reading proposed legislation, you decide that your views are not in line with most of the people you represent, then you should inform them of that and why you believe in your view and CONVINCE them. Third, you should always be acting ethically and honorably.

Poll after poll shows that the majority of American people do not want the proposed health care bill passed. We do want health care reform; we DO NOT WANT the current bill. It is far too overreaching, it is far too expensive, and it is in effect taking the initial steps which will change our health care system from an entrepreneurial private business system to a socialistic system. In America, health care is a profit business. There is absolutely no way to demand private profit-making businesses to take on pre-existing condition cases and make the changes this bill is requiring without them having to pass that cost onto the people buying their insurance… otherwise the company clearly will go bankrupt. That is just common sense, a valuable attribute which a large number of you in Congress seem to have left at the front door of the House and Senate.

YES, we want health care reform. No, we do not want to be forced by the federal government to buy health insurance. No, we do not want to pay into any proposed plan for four years before receiving any benefits. . . would anyone you know buy an insurance policy which dictated that they make payments into the insurance plan for four years before being covered by it? Neither my husband nor I have had health insurance for more than 2 years, since he initially lost a job of 12 years. Yes, we wish we had health insurance. We have been very fortunate in that we have not suffered major health issues in the past 2 years. Still, we do not want the current health care bill passed. If you think it is the American people’s wish to have the government force all Americans to buy health care insurance, then do the right thing and have that put to the vote in a general election. We hear repeatedly from the Administration that there is a large amount of fraud and waste in the current health care system --- then logically, you in Congress should be enacting legislation which will stop or minimize that fraud and waste!

We do not elect you to Congress so you can bow down to the pressures of your party leaders and the President. We elect you to Congress to represent our wishes and to work as a whole with the rest of Congress to pass legislation which makes America the best possible place to live and work and raise our families. We do not elect you to Congress so you can use bribery, backroom deals and undue pressure to coerce fellow members of Congress to vote your way.

We have been taught our entire life that one of the main strengths of our political system is the system of checks and balances built into the Constitution. The President is the head of the Executive Branch, and as such he is the head of state and Commander-in-Chief of the armed forces. He is responsible for implementing and enforcing the laws written by Congress. . . IMPLEMENTING and ENFORCING THE LAWS WRITTEN BY CONGRESS. As President, it is entirely expected and appropriate that he let you in Congress know what laws he is hoping to have passed and to urge you to pass those laws. As President, he should be the leader of ALL Americans; he should be leading the way in terms of working with ALL members of Congress, demonstrating the value of debate, consideration of all views, and compromise among opposing views.

Unfortunately, President Obama, in spite of all his rhetoric to the contrary, has shown himself to be extremely partisan. Rather than helping to abate the partisan attitudes of Congress, rather than acting as the leader of the nation, he has repeatedly demonstrated extreme partisanship and repeatedly dismissed all those views not in line with his own. He talks about “reaching across the aisle,” yet his actions indicate that his idea of reaching across the aisle is to seek out those Republicans who agree with him and to dismiss those Republicans who do not agree with him. He has not shown any degree of listening in earnest to the ideas of anyone who opposes him and then work in earnest to reach a compromise. He has not shown outrage at the blatant bribery-deals taking place in return for favorable votes.

The President seems to be torn between being the head of the Executive Branch and being embroiled in the Legislative Branch. Congress has sole responsibility to pass legislation; it seems unethical for the President to go to the lengths he is going in order to have legislation passed that he has decided is necessary. He should, in a bipartisan manner, urge you in Congress to pass legislation he believes is right. . . he should not be involved in high-pressure strong-arming to get specific legislation passed. On the White House website, it says “Learn how America's federal, state and local governments work to enact the will of the people, and how President Obama and his administration collaborate with the Legislative and Judicial branches to govern the United States.” Then why is he not listening to the will of the people? As stated above, poll after poll shows that the majority of American people are not in favor of the health care reform measures currently being considered by Congress ―yet the Administration continues to forge ahead with this bill.

The President is not only forging ahead, he is now encouraging you to resort to the use of questionable tactics such as “Reconciliation” and “Deeming” to try to force passage of this bill which is clearly against the will of the people. He has the Power of Veto. He has made his plea to you in Congress and to the American people. If Congress listens to the American people and rejects this bill, or passes a bill which the President does not agree with, he can use the Power of Veto to reject. That is one of the checks and balances built into the Constitution, balances which were purposefully established so that no one person or group would gain too much power. This President seems to be blurring the lines between the Executive and the Legislative Branches; he has made his wishes abundantly clear ―unfortunately he has personally intervened so much that even if this Bill passes it is tainted.

If you in Congress act honorably and listen to the will of the people, this Bill will be rejected. Hopefully, you will then reorient to this task and as a whole body come up with a series of Bills which will attack waste and fraud in the Health Care System and which will begin reform in meaningful, measurable bites which meet with agreement of both Democrats and Republicans. Hopefully, during this deliberation phase of Congress, the President will reasonably urge ALL of you to listen to and consider his views ―and then step back and allow our system of checks and balances to work without undue strong-arming and political pressure. Hopefully, this President will show himself to have the integrity he projected during his campaign and will speak out forcefully against political bribery and partisan sniping. Hopefully, this President will review the promises and pledges he made during his campaign and decide to live up to them. Either way, the ball is now in your court and we are looking to you to act honorably and ethically and vote NO on this proposed Health Care Reform proposal.
