Owl

By Brian Michael Barbeito
Mar. 4, 2010

The woman had not seen the owl in many weeks. As she walked along the forest path she saw many squirrels as birds flew up from bushes and chose higher landings in the trees. She thought to herself that she would like to see the owl again and as she rounded a corner another lady chased a dog. The dog had been running back and forth scaring the owl while the owl kept changing trees. Soon the dog had gone and the owl had settled. The woman stopped and looked up at the owl. It was brown, and the eyes were strangely dark, beyond black. It looked around then in the other direction, by rotating its head with great precision, as if the head was on a robot neck. The woman continued to watch and then walked on. The path led to an opening and the bright sky had been there waiting to greet the woman. The owl flew in the other direction, deeper into the forest, carrying itself through the thick trees with acumen and a queer type of solitary intent.
