June 29, 2010 Well then again, maybe not king. Sorry LeBron but Michael is still the king according to the basketball nation. No disrespect toward Mr. James, because being second to the all mighty Air Jordan is pretty cool! Don’t worry dear boy you’re just next in line for the thrown, I think. And of course my sincerest condolence goes out to all the diehard heartbroken Cleveland Cavaliers fans and the LeBron admirers. I know you all were probably looking for some kind of miracle from him during the NBA playoffs. Okay here’s the thing, no matter how good LeBron is, he still needs help consistently from the rest of his teammates. Yes I said team! Magic had a gang of super heroes when he was with the Lakers. Larry Bird had awesome role players when he played in Boston. Michael had his “Boy Wonder” sidekick in Scottie Pippen. And all three superstars came away with not only one championship, but with multiple championships. The fans and the media some time allow superstars to overshadow the rest of the squad. The game of basketball is not an individual sport like golf. Although some superstar drama queens on our favorite team may make us believe it is at times. The fact of the matter is that one individual doesn’t win or lose games. The whole entire organization decides that. In the blue collar city of Cleveland, Ohio every sports fan should know that championships have been far and few through the decades coming from there. The original Cleveland Browns organization picked up and hit the road after its 1995 season consequentially leaving the city without a professional football team for about three years. Also in 1995 the Cleveland Indians lost the World Series to the Atlanta Braves………period. And most recently in the LeBron era, the Cavaliers did make it to the Promised Land. It was an exciting time again for the city. What could possibly go wrong? They had jumped the final hurdle to reach the NBA Finals at last. Plus they had the best player in the league. Well the San Antonio Spurs rolled into town and crushed the Cavaliers in four games. So here we all are after seven long years still waiting for LeBron and his royal court to produce a championship. For all of you who don’t know anything about sports, championships aren’t giving out like free samples. The problem for LeBron is that he has met up with teams that had more than one superstar player. While on his team he is the man and the only consistent player. Every smart fan knows that money is the prime motivator for any star player. That player knows that all eyes are on him to do something spectacular every game. But still the other professionals on the team have to earn their keep. Unfortunately the players on the Cavaliers team are standing around waiting to see what LeBron is going to do next just like the fans are sitting up in the stands. Somebody please get this poor fella some help. But it might be too little too late for Cleveland, not LeBron. Which brings the entire sports nation to this question, will LeBron stay in Cleveland, or will he hit the road? Even the odds makers in Vegas may be getting in on this one. And the entire state of Ohio is in serious jeopardy once again of not getting a shot at any more professional championships for a very long time. Many sports experts have LeBron’s future already laid out for him. They know what he’s thinking at all times. Yeah right! Only that young man knows what it is he truly wants to do. He knew even before the ink dried on his first contract. The Cleveland Cavaliers organization know that there are two important reasons why LeBron might consider staying put. One big reason is the money. The franchise can make it rain for him as long as he pleases. But that could have a down side also. LeBron has made tons of money from his home team and from endorsements already. Instead of shoving all the cash to him again, it may make better sense for them to go out and get a lot more talent to help. The current line up with the exception of King James just isn’t getting the job done. Another reason he may consider staying is because he’s from neighboring Akron, Ohio, a small city not far from Cleveland. If he decides to stay, by the time he retires from the Cavaliers he may own the state of Ohio but without a crown. It’s known that LeBron has strong family ties there as well. He has really attached himself in the communities in and around Akron especially Cleveland. Make no mistake LeBron and his camp are very intelligent and strategic. So far he has become a financial giant. Whatever he seems to touch automatically turn into gold. But what any athlete want at the end of the day is a championship. After they’ve matured and made tons of money along with other honors, it all goes back to what they are really playing for. All athletes should want to play for a championship at some point in their career. That’s what they are most measured and remembered for in the sports world. Hopefully LeBron will not end up like so many other NBA legends that didn’t win a championship. Maybe before he makes any type of career decisions, he might want to chat with one of them. Like Karl “The Mailman” Malone who played for the Utah Jazz. Or Charles “The Round Mound of Rebound” Barkley who spent the later years in his Hall Of Fame career chasing a championship. Maybe spend some quality time with Reggie “The Knick Killer” Miller who played his whole career in the small sports market of Indiana for the Pacers. Ask those guys about how it feels to be one of the greatest NBA players in history, but without a ring. Those players were great in their era. And LeBron definitely have something in common with them right now. No Trophy! What will they call him if he fails to win one, LeBron “The King without A Ring” James? The Boston Celtics who stumped the Cavaliers this year in the playoffs played for another title and were considered to be too old. Maybe so, but they also have three Hall Of Famers on the team. Those three have rings as well. On paper LeBron and the Cavs should’ve ran through them. After all they had the best record again in the league. But on the court he and his team didn’t have a chance in Hell of beating the C’s. So this summer as LeBron chills around the pool and try to figure out his next move, the Cavaliers organization better pucker up and get ready to kiss his royal behind. They haven’t done a good job as far as on the court issues. And surprisingly some of the fans in Cleveland are slowly turning against him because he hasn’t delivered the goods yet.
Some advice to the City of Cleveland and its restless fans, be very careful you’re all treading on thin ice. This is still a young kid who wears his feelings on his sleeves but has tremendous basketball talent that’s only going to get better. Don’t start throwing stones at him, because the Chicago Bulls, the Miami Heat, and the New York Knicks would love to make him part of their family. Your foolish behavior and ridicule thus far will cost you in the end. Remember he’s not Michael Jordan, he’s LeBron James. Go to the mirror and say it as many times as necessary until it finally settles in. The guy is trying to bring back respect to all of Cleveland sports. Oh yes, the nasty rumors floating around town about one of his teammates and his mom having an affair won’t help keep him either. GO CAVS!
