June 3, 2010 Oil spews into the Gulf of Mexico at the rate of five thousand barrels a day. There is no way to clean it up as so far the technology doesn’t exist. Some would put the blame on BP; the off shore oil lobby; some on conservatives in general- and of course that arch villain: George W Bush. By the logic of ascribing blame for Katrina on Bush surely it is also logical that this devil is still working behind the scenes, Machiavellian like orchestrating an environmental catastrophe. (a)The right wing has for years been pushing for off shore drilling.(b) And who was the big wig in the oil industry prior to becoming George Bush’s vice president; why of course Dick Cheney. With the increase in oil drilling at greater and greater depths the chance of an oil leak becomes greater and greater. Capitalism is naturally geared to put systems in place that take advantage of future events. Some one some where knew this was more likely to happen as not. If things were taken to their logical conclusion it would have become apparent that it would have been almost impossible for this oil spill not to have happened. Obviously some one was, if not asleep at the wheel, studiously avoiding thinking about the possible consequences of ever increasing drilling at greater and greater depths. What, you may ask, would be the point in point in allowing the pollution of the Gulf and its surrounding beaches to occur? Well for year’s analyst have been predicting two hundred dollars a barrel oil. Sure it has been easing down over the last year or so but its basic thrust is ever upwards. Conservatives would like to ease America’s dependence upon its imports from over seas, especially from China. When oil hits $200 a barrel it will be, according to the experts, cheaper to manufacture things as close to home as possible. This brings in play a scenario where Buffalo, Detroit, Pittsburgh etc become the steel producing and manufacturing giants they once were. Soon only those who have lots of cash will be able to fly. Both of these factors will aid in the elimination of terrorism as with less travel it will be harder for terrorists and drug smugglers to move across international borders. The world will enter a pre World War Two mode which might be hard on the developing nations but a fact of life hard to avoid; the developed nations in no way able to pull them out of the poverty which has been their natural lot since, as far as I can tell, the beginning of time (or since they moved out of the pre agricultural stage).
Of course Bush and Cheney are not responsible. Things are happening in a random manner, the present occurrence the one to break the camels back. With the public outcry sure to occur the oil companies will be forced to set aside a fund in order to guard against such occurrences which will put oil prices higher faster than the current rate of increase which in turn will bring about a massive change in international relations.
