Sick To Death Of Mel Gibson And Lindsay Lohan

By Meri Ulrich
July 22, 2010

My Granddaughter had open heart surgery yesterday (she's doing well today), the economy is in the toilet, many people in the gulf states are fighting an oil spill of biblical proportions, somewhere someone is dying needlessly for lack of medial care and the list goes on and on.

What are the cable news media preoccupied with...Mel (raving lunatic) Gibson and his ridiculous girlfriend and Lindsay (I can do whatever I want because I'm a celebrity) Lohan.

Why in the world should I care about those people? Why does anyone care about those people? Is it because they can do anything they want too because they are celebrities or because they have a lot of money? Is it because their problems make us feel better about our own mundane lives? I sure can't figure out the answer to that because I am so sick and tired of hearing about people who have absolutely no understanding or concern about my troubles and the troubles of most of us normal people.

Who cares if spoiled, self-entitled Lindsay has to have a full body cavity search and might have to spend a of couple weeks in jail. If it were you or me we'd have to serve the entire 90 days that the judge ordered. We would not be in an isolated, protected place in a dangerous jail. We would not have the cameras turned off in a courtroom so no one could see us do the perp walk. We would be thrown into general population at the mercy of the other prisoners. WE are not celebrities.

Mel Gibson has offended just about every human being on earth yet he is worth almost a billion dollars and will continue to make films and make even more money. He will have his important supporters because he can pay their bills and employ them no matter what kind of a monster he is. If we behaved the way he has we would be out of work and out of luck because WE are not celebrities.

I go about my business and try to get by every single day. I am on social security and didn't even get a 1% cost of living raise while almost all of my monthly expenses have gone up this year....I bet you are going through something similar in your lives as well. We struggle and we worry and we don't rant and rave or walk around high but no one takes a look at our lives because WE are not celebrities.

I like to watch afternoon news programs to keep up with the news of the day but lately it's all the same news. It's the Mel and Lindsay show every day, all day.

I don't know how to make this any clearer...I do not care about Mel Gibson or Lindsay Lohan and if they both rot in jail somewhere it will be fine with me. Both of these creatures are not worthy of a minute of our time let alone hour upon hour of coverage day after day.

What this shows me is that the mythical town of Hollywood is not just a place where druggies wander up and down Hollywood Boulevard, where millions of dollars are spent on D-List celebs for showing up at some seedy nightclub, or where most of the people living there can't afford to pay their rent and wind up waiting tables or worse; it is a place where fact is scarier than fiction and where the true horror is not on film, but in the homes of the rich and famous. Maybe if they had less camera time and news coverage and more reality in their lives these same monsters would straighten up and stop terrorizing each other and anyone else who happens to cross their path.

If not for a handful of real journalists I would never know what is going on in the world. I would simply become an expert in the dysfunction of Hollywood's fallen stars. That's a subject that I have had quite enough of.

Why am I ranting and raving about people who don't care about me and who I don't care about in return? Perhaps because so many important things are going by the wayside. Do these creeps really sell that much soda or soap or car insurance? Is this what the sponsors pay for and insist on having broadcast during the time that they purchase on daytime television?

It makes me almost want to go back to watching Soap Operas, a habit I gave up over 30 years ago. Almost..........
