Elizabeth Edwards - Resilience Personified

By Beverly Stern
July 17, 2010

You may not be a Democrat, a liberal or a scorned woman, but you’ve got to admire the strength of a woman named Elizabeth Edwards. Granted, you are thinking as many do, she grew up in a privileged home and married a handsome, rich politician so what could be so bad. However, when you get to see what she has endured, you realize that she is the epitome of a resilient woman—hence her new book called “Resilience.”

Mrs. Edwards had two children, a daughter and a son who died in a traffic auto accident. After Wade’s death, she went on to have two more children at age 48 and 50. Mrs. Edwards is a very educated woman in her own right. She went to graduate school for several years, majoring in English and ended up graduating from law school.

Before John Edwards decided to run for Vice President, Elizabeth discovered that she had breast cancer. It wasn’t just breast cancer; it was Stage Four terminal breast cancer. She immediately began chemo. Elizabeth maintained a very stoic persona and showed her optimistic face to the public. In 2007, John Edwards dropped out of the race. By then Elizabeth’s doctor told her that her cancer had spread to her ribs, her hip and possibly to her lungs.

Once again, we saw in interviews, the face of a strong woman determined to raise her two young daughters. Granted she admitted to some pity days, but all in all, she was moving on with her life. I wondered how anyone could have that much strength and if so, what genes or modeling contributed to that. I wanted half of her strength just to face my mundane issues.

In January 2010, Elizabeth was dealt a deeper blow. John Edwards had been having an affair with a news reporter he met. The reporter was pregnant and John wouldn’t admit her was the father. From Elizabeth’s honesty came halting denials from John until a paternity test blatantly determined his fatherhood. As if that were not enough to handle, the mistress began doing TV interviews in attempts to damage the reputation of Elizabeth and make mockery of her marriage to John.

Elizabeth filed for divorce. She opened a furniture store in NC where she lives in a huge home that she and John once shared. She encourages John to be a good father to their children as well as to the adorable little girl he fathered out of wedlock. Mrs. Edwards is what we call a real “mensh”. ….. a Yiddish word meaning a decent, responsible person with admirable characteristics.

On a interview I saw recently with Larry King and Elizabeth, I was amazed once again, that even with her grueling chemo therapy, she is still a wonderful mom with faith and hope that she will be alive to see her girls graduate from high school. She didn’t mention John’s mistress by name as she doesn’t want to give her publicity or defame her. Nor does she badmouth John Edwards. She doesn’t cry either—at least not in public. I cried for her. If only she could bottle that kind of resiliency and give it to me.
