Matthew Makes Jesus A Racist

By Thomas Keyes
July 21, 2010

A cold, canny, calculating consideration of the Gospels leads one to the conclusion that it’s quite possible, indeed virtually certain, that Jesus did not exist at all. There is not a shred of tangible evidence associated with his person. The Gospels themselves cannot possibly be true. Not only are the tales totally absurd, but they contradict each other on many points. Extra-Biblical references to Jesus start only decades after the supposed time of his crucifixion. The so-called teachings of Jesus are largely vague, irrelevant or false. Jesus was almost undoubtedly the invention of the Evangelists, whatever their motives may have been.

However, if despite all this, there was a man named Jesus, he was what today would be called a “racist”, if the Gospel According to St. Matthew is to be taken seriously. In those days of course the modern notion of maintaining political correctness 24/7 had not come into being. So if Jesus wanted to be anti-Gentile, he could do so with impunity.

Take a look at Matthew 15:21 to 15:28, from the King James Version.

Matthew 15:21 Then Jesus went thence, and departed into the coasts of Tyre and Sidon.

Matthew 15:22 And, behold, a woman of Canaan came out of the same coasts, and cried unto him, saying, Have mercy on me, O Lord, thou son of David; my daughter is grievously vexed with a devil.

Matthew 15:23 But he answered her not a word. And his disciples came and besought him, saying, Send her away; for she crieth after us.

Matthew 15:24 But he answered and said, I am not sent but unto the lost sheep of the house of Israel.

Matthew 15:25 Then came she and worshipped him, saying, Lord, help me.

Matthew 15:26 But he answered and said, It is not meet to take the children's bread, and to cast it to dogs.

Matthew 15:27 And she said, Truth, Lord: yet the dogs eat of the crumbs which fall from their masters' table.

Matthew 15:28 Then Jesus answered and said unto her, O woman, great is thy faith: be it unto thee even as thou wilt. And her daughter was made whole from that very hour.

The Canaanites were a Semitic people, but they were not Jews. So the lady in the story was a Gentile. Jesus replied to her, “I am not sent but unto the lost sheep of the house of Israel…It is not meet to take the children’s bread and cast it to the dogs.”

Modernizing his diction, we get, “I’m just here to serve distressed Jews. It’s not right to feed Jews’ bread to Gentile dogs.”

But she was willing to grovel before Jesus with such abandon that he granted her wish anyway.

Matthew did not miss a chance to insert another reference to Jesus as the descendant of David, as if some stupid Gentile woman knew that David had lived in Bethlehem 1000 years before her time.
