Who Is Your Toughest Critic?

By Kaycee Nilson
July 14, 2010

For some people, when you ask them who their toughest critic is, most of the time you will receive the answer that they are their own worst enemy. And in the majority of the cases this is true. Most people worry about every little thing they say or do to a point of “second-guessing” themselves to death.

But what if one of your own worst critics is your own child? I strive to do my best at something that brings me great joy, instead of telling me the good; all I hear is the bad. I know that I have never intentionally tried to decrease the joy my child has had in their endeavors, so it hurts when I am not shown the same courtesy that I have extended.

It’s difficult to write something that is of your expertise or interest, let alone have someone blast you over every piece you write. And all of the time this happens, you never hear “Hey, that article you wrote about _______ was really good!”

I don’t sit at my computer at a specified time of the day to write, I write when the mood strikes me. So a lot of my articles are written from the heart, with good intentions, and a lot of the times have some information I don’t have at that time. (Like when I suggest that purple would be a good color for Ovarian Cancer until I was informed that the official color is Teal! I have since joined NOCC) But I do counter-act those articles with a follow up that states what I have learned.

When it’s articles about MY feelings, how can I be wrong for sharing those, as those articles are opinionated and not wanting to base on fact? Yes I am an emotional writer the majority of the time and an informative piece normally comes when the mood really strikes me as information that I need to share with those that read what I write.

I write for me, I’m not writing to become famous, get high hits on Google, OK sure it would be GREAT to have my novel published and also finish the other three manuscripts I have started. But these articles are more for reaching out to others like me in this world. There are those people that might have disabilities that make it hard for them to have a conventional job. They may have manic depression; the ladies might have fought ovarian cancer. They may have three kids in different stages of life, have a blended family, have a crazy cat life and enjoy cooking shows and watching movies.

I don’t want to be Barbara Walters or Kati Corirc (sp). I just want to be me and have the ability to have a forum to be able to reach out to those people in the world that like reading the facts that they are not alone. There are too many people in this world for every person’s problems to be unique. How many out there are looking to buy a house and for months, no matter how quick you put in the contract, you couldn’t get a contract accepted by a seller until you were ready to throw in the towel and stop looking?

That has been going on in our lives ever since March and we find out SOON when our closing date will be. Nerve wrecking? You bet your sweet bippy (yeah I’m censoring myself!) we are frazzled and stressed to the point of being physically sick.

So when I write to share my life with the internet, I don’t think it’s just for a person to contact me and try to constrict my license to put my feelings into words that I think would allow people in the same situation to try to understand how I felt. Just because I might twist “events” doesn’t mean that doesn’t diminish the emotion behind that event.
