It's Not A Tiger; It's A Leper

By Thomas Keyes
Jan. 11, 2010

Let me sum up some of the allegations and conjectures that have been made about Tiger Woods in the past month or so:

1.) He wrecked a car and some other property while driving drunk.
2.) In past years, while married, he has consorted with 15 or more mistresses.
3.) He was treated in the US by a Canadian doctor not licensed to practice in the US who has been charged with trafficking in performance-enhancing drugs.
4.) His jilted wife knocked out some of his teeth with a nine-iron, and he is getting cosmetic surgery on that account.
5.) He has told some utterly vile jokes and made obnoxious comments in private.
6.) He and a mistress took prescription sleeping pills before sex.
7.) He and another mistress took ecstasy, an illegal psychoactive drug containing MDMA.
8.) He has had gay sexual encounters.
9.) His father told him marriage is unnecessary in a mobile society like ours.

It’s very likely that most of these allegations are true, and completely possible that they are all true. Yet this is a man who earned hundreds of millions of dollars for something so inconsequential as being a good golfer. No one is supposed to refer such things to outmoded stereotypes, but if anyone ever fit the stereotype, it was Tiger Woods.

The United States of America is a country of hero-worshipping, television-addicted zombies who will tolerate almost anything so long as baseball, football, basketball, soccer, hockey and golf are broadcast every day of the week, 24 hours a day, on one or more channels.

To me, it’s utterly preposterous that professional athletes earn millions of dollars in salary each year, and Americans still have the nerve to act as if surprised when recession and inflation appear. Of course, sports did not cause the recession, but this extravagance is characteristic of the numerous kinds of waste that helped pave the way. Give this blockhead hundreds of millions, and let other people suffer foreclosures.

Tiger Woods is especially reprehensible for having posed for years as a good sportsman, good citizen and all-around decent fellow, while, obedient to the stereotype, he rode roughshod over the morality of the majority. It’s not that the moral majority have all the right answers; they do not. And it might be worthwhile considering whether some revisions are necessary to accommodate the wilder morality of the minority. But the fact that Woods has been such a blatant hypocrite about it all is what is most annoying.

This kind of promiscuity shows up in the fact that, in the US, 70% of black children are born out of wedlock while 50% of black teen-age girls carry sexually-transmitted diseases. Then there’s the high incidence of HIV/AIDS among blacks in both the US and Africa.

I didn’t suspect anything before it happened. I don’t follow golf at all and I don’t watch television. Nonetheless Woods was on the periphery of my consciousness somehow. I knew he was making a lot of money, but had no idea of how much until recently. Woods’ fall doesn’t surprise me in the least. He fits the black stereotype that I have always believed and still believe.

Instead of lavishing millions of dollars on the black athletes that they cherish, Americans should view them more critically and distrustfully. At least, though, Woods was not as bad as Simpson.
