Shame On You Toyota!

By Gregory Brooks
Feb. 28, 2010

As you may already know, every now and again something in the news always seem to get me revved up. And then simply I can’t keep quiet any longer. Those money hungry bad boys at Toyota have really done it now. How dare they let a dirty little secret leak out to the public about a few malfunctions to their automobiles. I mean what could have they all been thinking? Now they’ve exposed what we all suspected all along about greedy, insensitive, and government protected companies.

For decades Toyota has been one of the top leading foreign automakers. Their reputation for quality and style set the bar for all others to reach. Most people keep their beloved Toyotas for years like prized possessions. The American muscles of the car industry like Ford and Chevy, really had to look over their shoulders a lot for years until now. Because of Toyota’s irresponsible negligence, they had to recall 8.5 million cars worldwide. And what’s worse are the deaths that came as a result of all this madness. The main problem was that the gas peddle from all things was getting stuck and the car itself accelerated at high speeds. Some speeds reaching 100 miles per hour. With unsuspecting drivers behind the wheel unable to slow down, it was as if the car took on a life all its own described by one former Toyota owner.

We all know that once the media hype cease, it will be back to business as usual for Toyota. I’m afraid that as much as people are skeptical of buying a Toyota right now, the company will somehow convince their loyal customers to sign their own death certificates with confidence once again. Oh the power of persuasion, foreign or not all cars are built the same in my book. They all are designed and constructed by humans. And human error can cause mass destruction in anything, just take a look around.

Basically Toyota ignored customer complaints. In fact some owners were even charged to fix the problem. Now if that wasn’t a slap in the face, I don’t know what is. The company’s arrogance also led to accusations of the mistreatment of customers and blaming them for the mechanical problems. In the United States, The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration received an estimated 1100 complaints on the 2010 Pruis brakes back in February of 2009. Also the (NHTSA) reported it had received complaints on 34 fatalities and six nonfatal injuries connected to the problem since 2000.

Earlier this week the CEO of Toyota, Akio Toyoda apologized for his company’s actions. He regretted the safety errors that led to the senseless deaths and worldwide recalls for the accelerator and braking malfunctions. He said that his company’s “priorities became confused” while in a massive growth period over the past decade at the expense of the consumers safety concerns. We must admit that he media can blow things way out of proportion at times. But this one occasion I’m glad they are helping to blow the whistle and keep the spotlight on the issue. No apologies now or in the future can ever bring back the lives lost from this blunder, and their will definitely be backlashes to follow. Bottom line people, Toyota is wrong and the only reason they came clean is because they got busted.

The problem is obvious, companies simply don’t care anymore. To get their full attention a lawsuit or a tragedy has to occur. But it’s sad to say that this is how some companies feel about the public opinions and concerns. No doubt all this will in time open the flood gates to other automakers coming clean and correcting their own mistakes as well. With all the advanced technology out there, one would think we wouldn’t have to go back to the Stone Age and put the brakes on with our feet to stop cars like the Flintstones! Hey I stopped riding bicycles back in the early 90’s, but now I’m thinking long and hard about dusting the old three speed off. You know getting back to the basics, I mean what’s the worse could happen, a recall on bikes?

In closing I hope Toyota’s dilemma serve notice to all the shady companies that are thinking about cutting corners on safety. Stop using people as guinea pigs or test dummies. Human lives can not be bought or sold. And they certainly can’t be replaced either. Greed is a terrible disease and it can destroy almost anything if you allow it to. But for those of you who may not be aware, there’s a book that brakes it all down clearly, and it states “money and riches are the root to all evil”. I think we witnessed that first hand, don’t you think?
