Feb. 23, 2010 Talk about conundrum. A new drug for proteinuria or protein in urine has been shown to cause serious complications in the exact population that it was designed for. The latest news from the Journal of the American Society of Nephrology, February 18th issue: "The new drug Avosentan may reduce proteinuria but causes serious adverse effects in patients with type 2 diabetes and kidney disease" In the clinical study of the 1392 patients that were in the study 50 percent were on the medication and the other 50 on placebo. Those that were on the drug were immediately taken off of it, when serum creatnin levels, blood pressure and other side effects began to get worse. After the study, the follow up on the patients exhibiting side effects showed kidney diseases and many needed to begin dialysis. They self admit "Avosentan Not a Viable Therapeutic Option". The use of an ACE inhibitor, or other drug to allow the kidneys to function in spite of the start of renal problems has been part of standard diabetic care for over 20 years. Included in this is a drastic correction in diet and usually the patient is put on insulin. Proteinuria is the presence of proteins in the urine. This means the kidneys are not filtering out the protein and they are dissolving themselves. To stop this, a change in diet with less protein is begun and insulin is started. With so many diabetics afraid of insulin, which can help protect the kidneys, science is always looking for a pill. People often think a pill means I am not in as bad a shape. iI this case, the drug will literally kill you quicker. So this brings us to a new conundrum. Is the any new drug worth its development when it causes new or more serious complications? Like other new generation drugs, serious side effects have caused a number of concerns and in many cases the taking of the medication creates a danger to oneself and society. Like some complications that have been reported with night time eating of dangerous objects from taking insomnia medication, getting a different diseases taking RA injectables, cancer as a side effect from yet other drugs, Taking herbal supplements and cholesterol drugs and going psychotic and heart attack and stroke for others. The list of drugs and their side effects instead of being small is growing day by day. What makes it even worse is when doctors are not even double checking whether drugs are compatible. They prescribe because someone hands them a box or someone asks them and television commercials create situations where the patient becomes the prescriber. . Make sure that if you think a drug may work for you, you tale the time with your doctor and make sure he is knowledgeable in any medication you take. PDR’s or Physican Desk Reference are printed to keep doctors in the know and make sure of a drugs side effects, uses and so on. Being an informed person and making sure your doctor knows that not all drugs are suitable or even worthwhile is best defense.
