Politicians, Are You Really Getting The Message?

By Barbara Scheidel
Feb. 14, 2010

Enough already! So Sarah Palin wrote 7 words on her hand… let’s see, she gave a 40-minute speech with only note cards, without the aid of a teleprompter, but the fact that she wrote 7 words on her hand has gained much media attention and much criticism from her detractors. Where was the media when President Obama mispronounced the word “Corpsman” three times in a recent speech? Where was the media when President Obama spoke to a group of 12 years old and used a teleprompter? Where was the media when President Obama, during his State of the Union address, incorrectly stated the effects of a recent decision by the Supreme Court? I googled “media on Sarah Palin hand notes” and it came back with 1,440,000,000 hits. I googled “media on Obama using teleprompter with 6th graders” and it came back with 19,700. I heard nothing on television news media about the teleprompter with the 6th graders, but they’re all over Sarah Palin having 7 key words written on her hand! News media, start doing your job, which is to report balanced news, not to influence the viewer, not to express your opinions, and definitely not to influence voters by projecting one Party/politician in the worst possible light and the Party/politician you support in only the best possible light.

President Obama, the Democratic Party leaders, the Republican Party leaders, and the media all seem to be missing what I believe is the message that at least some voters have been trying to send by votes in recent governor-elections and in the election of Scott Brown from Massachusetts. It’s not about Democrats, it’s not about Republicans ---- it’s about wanting a Congress that is answerable to the American people and which listens to the American people. I may be wrong, but I see the Tea Party Movement as an effort by Americans who are frustrated with current legislators, be they Democrats or Republicans, to send a clear message to Washington: we want our elected politicians to be true to the promises they made while campaigning; we want our Congressional Representatives and Senators to act ethically and stop bribing colleagues for votes; we want our Congressional Representatives and Senators, once elected, to stop worrying about Party labels and work together in the best interests of the American people, all the American people.

President Obama needs to realize that a lot of Americans vote for the person and not by Party. He was elected by votes from Republicans and Independents as well as from Democrats because they believed in his campaign promises and the changes he said he supported. There were two very different approaches to getting our country back on track, and his approach gained the majority of votes. When he took office, many of the people who did not vote for him were willing to give him a chance and wished him well, and hoped, for the sake of our country, that his approach was the right one.

Unfortunately, almost immediately upon beginning his term, he began back-pedaling on his promises. He broke his promise regarding the appointing of former lobbyists. He broke his pledge to go through the budget line by line and eliminate pork-barrel spending. He has not listened to the majority of the American people: he has given terrorists civil rights even though Americans have made it clear we do not think they should have civil rights; he has repeatedly promoted health care reform without listening to the American people say we want health care reform but NOT the exact health care reform he is proposing. He carps about needing Congress to work in a bipartisan way and yet has been “leading” in a very partisan way. He has met repeatedly with Democratic leaders at the exclusion of Republican leaders. By his actions, he has shown that his idea of “reaching out” to political opponents is trying to convince them to agree with him. . . if they do, then he has reached out successfully, and if they don’t agree with him then they did not accept his reaching out!

Unfortunately, President Obama has now lost a lot of the trust he was initially given by Americans. Can he regain that trust? Once lost, trust must be earned back. He needs to start being a President of America as a whole. He needs to start acting as the head of the Executive Branch and stop trying to be both head of the Executive Branch and a member of the Legislative Branch. As the leader of the American people he should make his wishes for legislation known, and if he decides to proactively promote his agenda, then he should be meeting with leaders of all parties at the same time and encouraging them to come up with compromises they can live with. He should demonstrate how a leader listens to all input and does not just assume his personal ideas are the only way to go. He should be very vocal in stating that the vote-bribes which have occurred are not to be condoned and should not be tolerated. He needs to listen to the polls, not just tout them when they agree with him and ignore them when they don’t agree with him.

And Republicans, take heed. I do not believe the majority of American people are saying, “We want Republicans in office or in power as opposed to Democrats.” Rather, Americans are saying, “All politicians, regardless of party, stay true to the campaign promises which got you elected. Act with integrity. Once you’re in office, pay less attention to your Party label, work together with all those who have been elected, and do what’s right for America.”
