An Open Letter To So-Called "Pastor" Steven Anderson

By Timothy N. Stelly, Sr.
Feb. 28, 2010

The following is a letter I penned to the so-called pastor of an Arizona church, whose parishioners tote guns and pray for the demise of President Obama.

Steven Anderson
Faithful Word Baptist Church
2707 W Southern Ave, Suite # 105
Tempe, AZ 85282

Dear Mr. Anderson:

I think it is sad and shameful that you, an alleged man of God, would use Biblical scripture in such venomous fashion as to pray—and encourage others to do same—for the death of the first African-American President, Barack Hussein Obama. Furthermore, your fervent desire that he go to hell is a frightening and hypocritical message to send to the children who attend your venue.

I know you are trying to recruit members, but by declaring, “"I hope that God strikes Obama with brain cancer so he can die like Ted Kennedy," is a downright contradiction of Christian precepts and to exclaim that you want the President to go to hell goes against your own church doctrine, which states, “We …believe that God wants everyone to be saved.” If such is the case, why not pray for our President?

I find it hard to believe that the leader of a Christian faith church would encourage his congregation to hate the country’s leader. Even if you truly believe that Barack Obama is somehow “evil,” the Bible teaches us, “Thou shalt love thy neighbor as thyself. There is none other commandment greater than these.” (Mark 12:31)

Furthermore. For you to judge him as evil violates the admonition of Matthew 7:1—“Judge not, that ye be not judged. For with what judgment ye judge, ye shall be judged: and with what measure ye mete, it shall be measured to you again.”

You go so far as saying that “God wants me to hate Barack Obama.” Proverbs 10:12 state, “Hatred stirs up strife, but love covers all offenses.” You have certainly stirred up strife in people who trust you in their search for the truth; for Christian enlightenment; people who seek to be Christ-like, which means loving those whom we don’t see eye-to-eye with.

You are not an ordained minister, but by evoking the title of “Pastor,” you insinuate that you are. In no way does memorizing 100 chapters of the Bibles validate your mindless babblings. You are a charlatan. You are what Jesus warned about, when he said, “…Take heed that no man deceive you. For many shall come in my name, saying, I am Christ; and shall deceive many.” (Matthew 24:4-5).

I’m willing to bet that your “flock” contains no black parishioners. Hence, like the Klansman who burns a cross on the property of an unsuspecting black family, you are a racist, rabid in the belief of your own superiority. You espouse a dangerous mantra that is exclusionary and rooted in anger, all under the banner of it being “God’s will.”

I see your Sunday morning ramblings for what they really are: Dreck, and unworthy of the paper they’re printed on.

Still, I will pray for you. I will pray that you live a long life and along the way you discover the real meaning of Christian brotherhood.

Sincerely,

Timothy N. Stelly, Sr.
