Feb. 28, 2010 Our western world prides itself on the fact it shows tolerance to other people. This is not a bad thing and helps or society work better, but tolerance is not only for the color of ones skin or if one likes the same sex but also for the religious beliefs that a person hold. My question is, Why show tolerance to religion? Historical speaking it has shown no tolerance for anybody who disagree with it, this can be seen in both Christianity and Islam practices. So why show tolerance to such religions? Some argue that showing tolerance towards ones belief helps society function, stops wars from breaking out. In theory this sounds like a peaceful measure, in reality not so much. Example being, the west shows tolerance towards Islam………Radicals crash planes into American towers. Does that idea really work? Of course not because one side will always not show the same tolerance back How about the idea that you should not judge someone by what they belief? Also seems like a good idea, let everyone live there lives, But once again this is limited to a select group of religions. If someone was to tell you that they were a member of scientology, chances are you would laugh or think they are crazy. This idea also does not work due to the fact(as pointed out in my last article) that most religions tell the believer to judge those who have a different belief, this results in some extreme cases in violence and killings Why stop at someone’s religious beliefs? If a 30 year old man still believed in Santa Claus or had an invisible friend, chances are he would get a mental check up. But if that invisible friend is a “God” then it is ok? That is the break down of the logic that society holds today. If the person believes in a God(even if they believe that God made everything in 6 days then got lazy) there is no debate about it, you can not point out flaws in the belief system because it’s a “religion” and we are told to respect other peoples religions even if you can prove that said religion is wrong!
So what should you the reader do as a rational person? You should stop this “tolerance” and debate the religious people, Point out the flaws of their beliefs. Of course this is not a one way street, let them debate back and try to beat them in a battle of the minds. I would love to see the day where the world would let the intelligent minds flow with out chains keeping them down from some subjects. People should not be left to soak in their own ignorance, everything should be questions and thought about! A book is no reason for laws or war!.
