Tired Of Being Tired

By Gregory Brooks
Feb. 14, 2010

This morning I woke up to the annoying sound of my alarm clock. It was almost time for work, but I felt like I was back in high school again. Somewhere I hated going almost as much as my job now. I began to meditate like I so often do before leaving my serene sanctuary for work. You know about stuff like life, liberty, and the pursuit of happiness. But seriously though, have you ever stopped to think about the life and career path you chose?

I think that we all have a destiny to fill. Each living breathing poor soul on this giant mud ball we hail as Earth, has a calling. Something unique that only that person can do with a little bit more pizzazz! I also know that working for others only fulfill their dreams and not necessarily your own. You’ll never get ahead or rich by dancing with “the man”.

With that being said, I see and talk to family and friends who are trying desperately to advance in their jobs. And the same old traps await them as well. The main one is always having to schedule their life around work itself. Everybody I know complain about not having enough time for family or even themselves. We see more of our co-workers during the week than we’d like to. So what’s the deal? Has getting a steady paycheck made us too comfortable and continue to work at jobs that have stumped our potential?

But I often wonder about people with serious physical disabilities that have somehow overcome their private struggles that the naked eye can’t see and turn them into buoyant triumphs. It seems like no matter what, fate guided them through. They made it to their ultimate destiny. How about people like the late great Ray Charles or the fabulous Stevie Wonder? These two inspirational individuals came to mind after a friend of mine son started playing the saxophone. It’s my favorite instrument by the way. People I know personally who have the use of all their limbs and eye sight, including myself can’t even read a note let alone play any kind of instrument.

I’m not sure but maybe a person’s race and social condition play a bigger part in their journey through life. Ray Charles and Stevie Wonder’s lives were kind of parallel. At a very young age they both lost their vision. Both more than likely were probably considered a burden by most. And studying the era they both were born and raised in, one could assume that racism created a double strike against their place in society. But as history tells it, even those seemingly impossible obstacles did not deter them from taking something simple and accomplishing greatness. And I still ponder the thought, what’s really keeping the rest of us from achieving our hopes and dreams? Could it be in most cases just plain old laziness?

Perhaps we need to stop for a moment and do some soul searching. Maybe stop complaining about the things we can’t do and focus all our time and energy on the things we can do. The problem with most I find, is that we get comfortable in our day to day situations. Especially those of us who spend way too much time at work, but consider it as a dead end. The way I see it, maybe that doctor really didn’t want to study medicine. Or maybe that lawyer didn’t want to study law at all.

It’s all about finding what makes us happy at the end of the rainbow. Something you don’t consider as a job or a career, but it just comes naturally. Some people have taken their personal hobbies and ended up on Fortune 500. And the average person isn’t exactly looking to start an empire but just do better than where they are now. I don’t know what makes a teacher want to teach , or why a skydiver likes jumping out of an airplane for a living. But something is pulling them, eating at them, or driving them to do what they love to do. I’m proud to say that Mr. Ray Charles and Mr. Stevie Wonder are my all time great inspirations for being tired of being tired.

We don’t have to accept where we are or what we are doing if it doesn’t feel right. Some of us are stricken with all kinds of afflictions, but the human spirit cannot be chained nor can a destiny be denied. Take advantage of the gifts that you’re blessed with. Imagine if one day you woke up and they were gone. No sight, no hearing, and no movement. Let’s stop making excuses, be who and what we all are meant to do and be. We all need a little inspiration and some of us have the ability to be an inspiration. The last time I checked, I was inspired to write and become a professional writer. Wonder how that’s going? Anyway, I really would like to continue this topic further. But I got to go now before I’m late for work!
