Feb. 6, 2010 All hail the great army of Rome, where they traveled with food in mind and great recipes in tow. All hail Italy where they brought together great tasting food and made it portable. I am at a loss of where the idea that pizza as junk food came in. Is it because we can get it to go? Because eof oil? People it is time to wake up and elevate your idea of pizza! Pizza goes back to Italy and the roman legion. Where flat breads were loaded with tomatoes crushed tomatoes, cheeses and baked. So I am here as the advocate for Pizza. Pizza means pie, by the way. So when you order a pizza pie, you are having pie pie., just a pizza is a pie. Let us look at the actual breakdown of Pizza. First we have the crust. The crust is dough made from wheat, water and yeast. Umnn that’s bread dudes. The dough can have Parmesan cheese and spices added to it to give it a zip. The dough is worked and allowed to rise and develop. Then it is worked again tossed, flipped, stretched and manipulated to have that perfect thinness in the center graduating to the thicker edge. Now come to the good stuff the toppings. Pizza is comprised of few ingredients, what you want on top is up to you. But every ingredient has its merits. First lets look at Olive oil. Olive oil is heart healthy oil. It is the premiere oil of choice, metabolized and used in the human system. We can see everywhere Olive oil is better than such and such oil. So yeah Olive oil is the best. So raise the roof for olive oil. Tomatoes; Tomatoes are high in Lycopene, calcium and trace minerals. Every where you go people are being told to eat tomatoes and tomato products.. It prevents cancer so a slice or two has a full serving of veggies! Cheese. What is cheese? Cheese dear reader’s is protein! Yup Protein, that is 4 grams per 1 ounce! So you figure an average slice has about 8-12 grams of protein just from the cheese alone. Now onto the bonus toppings and here we have a variety of toppings that are full of protein. Protein is GOOD! Ground beef is browned and drained, No fat. Often the ground beef topping is also added with soy fillers and that has protein! This is GOOD topping. Hey what about chicken strips, well that is Protein. How about that Canadian bacon, protein too. Pepperoni, protein too. See a pattern here. Meats are proteins. What about Anchovies, Well they are a fish but it has packed in that little guy iodine too! And you guessed it Protein! How about those veggies? Like onions, peppers, Olives. How about that healthy veggies! Even the pineapple is good for you. Lots of digestive enzymes. So here is what you have, a carbohydrate base, lost of proteins, a serving of veggies and heart healthy olive oil. It is a Meal People! So why the bad idea. Well many think because it is a fast food it has to be bad. Many consider the olive oil to be bad. Many think the fat in the cheese as bad and many just think of it as bad because teenagers like it so much. The other thing that makes pizza bad is the table salt content. If you consider that eating a pizza helps you drink and stay hydrated and flush your kidneys, you are still looking positive. In fact Pizza as a staple to a diet is the equivalent of eating a plate meal. If we look at the comparison we can break it down to a 4 ounce piece of meat, a tossed salad on the side with olive oil and vinegar dressing, the salad has tomatoes in it, sprinkled with cheese, bread or rolls on the side. NO DIFFERENCE! If you look at the incidence of the areas in Italy where pizza is prevalent what do you see. No really fat people, no one to very few with heart disease and teenagers healthy. The slices are the same size the ingredients are the same no matter where in the world you go. What makes Pizza unhealthy is your own attitude. All in all Pizza is a complete meal. It is healthy and should be enjoyed, embraced and eaten as often as possible. You can make your own pizza using flat breads, pita, English muffins, tortillas, tomato paste and cheeses that you like.
I personally like the sauce with cheeses and cut green olives, pineapple on a small flour tortilla shell. I eat off the stuff and leave the shell.. Never did like crust.
