Grease Stains: America Vs. Calories

By Gregory Brooks
Feb. 3, 2010

We all should’ve seen it coming! The invasion of fast food restaurants and poor eating habits over the last 30 years. Along with it all came the massive calories. And now the health of America and certain other parts of the world are in serious jeopardy.

Obesity in the U.S. alone has gotten so out of control that some of the nation’s school systems are now contemplating banning chocolate milk from the lunch menu. Our children too have been snared in the seductive trap of calories. According to a study done by the World Health Organization, it found about 400 million people worldwide classify as being obese. Unfortunately, this includes 20 million children under the age of 5. So where does that leave us? The number of Americans grossly overweight, largely over shadow those who are considered as just being slightly obese. I guess it’s easy to point the finger at the so called “bad guys” which would be the fast food chains for our debilitated will power. And for crying out loud, nobody is putting a gun to our heads making us patronize them either.

A lot of America’s poor eating habits are passed down from generations. Even the region and state that we reside in may contribute to the problem as well. For instance, studies have shown regional obesity by state for years. The common states located in the West and New England areas, rank lowest amongst the fattest state classifications. While states located in the South and around the Rust Belt rank highest.

Most of the time our favorite dishes that are home cooked, are recipes from grandmothers all the way to favorite aunts. And if they are anything like my relatives, then calories are a part of the family. You know, like that uncle who always show up uninvited. I couldn’t believe how much sugar was needed to make a sweet potato pie the first time I watched one being made! Or how much mozzarella cheese is used on lasagna.

Now if you consider how many calories that are in those two delicious dishes, then what chance do we stand against the Whopper and his friend Big Mac? As children some of us had the honor and privilege to dine at some of America’s favorite fast food restaurants. Getting a Happy Meal was the best ever. Food and toys just went together for a kid back in the day.

Today we are the adults who are treating our families to a IHOP breakfast where the flapjacks could easily pass for a birthday cake. We simply haven’t cared about what we’ve eaten from day to day. Just as long as it is good and quick, which ever comes first. Subconsciously we will guzzle down a beef burrito and a soda then call it a day.

Like our parents, nobody has been counting the calories until now. And is it too late to rectify the problem? The government and even the National Football League has pitched ad campaigns about exercise and health. It was found that Americans spend about 33 million dollars annually on expensive weight loss products and services that usually don’t work With everything being super sized and a smorgasbord galore, it’s a no wonder why.

Look I stay in the Deep South. So I know first hand about what it is to battle calories. There is a country kitchen or a soul food establishment every where. My biggest nemesis though is Krispy Kreme Doughnuts. Oh my gosh! If anybody out there has had one of their glazed doughnuts, then you know what I’m talking about. One of those bad boys has about 300 calories. I’m not even going to mention how many I can eat before slipping into a diabetic coma.

Fortunately two states have found success or some divine formula to this dilemma. According to recent statistics, Colorado and Hawaii are among the thinnest states. And the great state of Mississippi is by far the fattest.

Maybe those two states don’t have a Krispy Kreme. Because if they knew what I know, that hot light will get you in trouble every time.
