Music And Mind Control

By Cadine Pillay
Dec. 8, 2010

“You are the music while the music lasts”: These were the famous words of T.S. Elliot, arguably the most important English Language poet of the 20th century, who understood that music is nothing if not appreciated and acknowledged. It is impossible not to appreciate music considering it comes from inspiration and at the same time inspires. It is the universal language and the best therapeutic medicine. Music embodies feelings and emotions, expresses tears and laughter and at its best moments, incites love. Music produces a kind of pleasure people cannot do without.

Movies have a different impact on people. Actors and actresses portray the ideal lifestyle and act out our hidden desires on the big screen. They are beautiful and rich but while we envy them and are influenced by their lifestyle to a certain extent, musicians are the ones who hold the real power over us. Music has a commanding effect on each individual. It has the unrecognizable ability to reach into the deepest parts of our souls and turn it inside out. Freud stated that the conscious is just the tip of the ice berg, and the unconscious is what sank the titanic. Unconsciously, music speaks to us and influences our thoughts, actions and character. This is why musicians have more power over society than politicians. If the media controls society, then musicians control the media.

There are three main aspects of music that subject us to the will of musicians: Music videos; lyrics and sound. These are the three most effective forms of mind control that is packed with controversial sayings, images and symbols. Musicians know that more than anything, controversy sells. The lyrics seep through our minds into our unconscious and dictate the way we live our lives. The images and symbols in the music videos give rise to our imagination, probably the most effective part of our psyche. Lastly, the sound itself when added to the images and words send us into almost a hypnotic trance. All these combined can stay with for an entire day sometimes even a week, playing and replaying over and over in our minds, influencing our choices and actions. Because we identify so much with a certain song or a certain artist, eventually we become one with the song and the artist and do everything we can to draw ourselves closer to them both, dressing accordingly and living our lives by the controversial words of that song.

Living our lives according to music is not necessarily a bad thing. Music is the poetry of the air, an outburst of the soul. Musicians are referred to as artists because music is art, but the most powerful, influential kind of art. Aware of the impact music has on people, most musicians use it to their advantage. Plato, one of the brightest minds of the Western world believed that music played a vital part in the creation of a perfect nation. Now imagine the effects of negative messages on our modern, impressionable society today. The general population only gets the first level of interpretation of songs or videos, but it is believed that the hidden meanings and symbols still affect the collective subconscious. Lyrics used to be about love, peace, corruption and freedom but nowadays it is shallow, thoughtless and biased. What are we to do in a world where lost souls are so easily controlled and manipulated? Are we to lead vain existences trying to fill the void in our lives by continuously satisfying our lowest impulses? We certainly cannot live without music, but we also cannot be brainwashed to maximize the profits of the capitalist music industry. This is the crossroads we are faced with in the 21st century of music. We cannot live in a world where music does not exist, so in order for music to be, there must be innocence lost because after all, we are the music while the music lasts.
