Aug. 19, 2010 After thinking about it I have concluded that those who know me and tell me that I tend to be negative are absolutely right. I do tend to approach things in a very realistic way which lately, comes across as negative. My thoughts come across as negative because I continually see negative situations and actions in the world in which I live. Let me begin with Arizona's law about immigration. (SB 1070). First, many have stated that this Bill will create racial profiling when law enforcement has to stop those they suspect of being illegal immigrants and demanding that they show proof of their status. Well, I have a surprise for all of those naysayers. We have been using "racial profiling" in this country (and all over the world) for many, many years. Here's an example: let's say that some bozo robs a bank and the bank has video cameras. Let's assume that there are also witnesses to the crime. These video pictures and witness statements describe a white male, 6 feet tall with blonde hair. The next step is to release the picture of the suspect or have a sketch artist re-create his likeness from the witness statements. This is usually how criminals are eventually caught. That is "racial profiling"!! The alternative to that is to describe the white male as black or Hispanic and change the color of his hair and his height in order to make sure that we don't racially profile all white males. The same goes for a black suspect or a Hispanic one or anyone, for that matter. How stupid would it be to change or alter a known description of someone because we might be offending his or her race? The operative word in regard to the Arizona's Bill is the word illegal. This word is defined as 1. forbidden by law; unlawful; illicit 2. unauthorized or prohibited by a code of official or accepted rules 3. a person who has entered or attempted to enter a country illegally . What's not to understand folks...if you are here illegally you have broken a law and should be stopped. To accuse the lawmakers of "racial profiling" is a smoke screen which covers up the bigger picture....removing those who break the law from our streets. If you don't like the law than create one that gives hard working illegal immigrants the ability to stay here, work and pay taxes. For those who refuse to obey the laws of the land and commit crimes, remove them. On to my next topic of negativity. Oprah!! I just heard a commentator state that if Oprah speaks everyone listens. Wrong!! I do not listen. I owned a bookstore when Oprah was in the middle of her book club hay day and no one bothered to ask any of us booksellers just how many of the copies of the books she recommended were returned. The percentage at my store (in an average middle class neighborhood), was 75% returns. Many of my customers either couldn't find the necessary ingredients for the recipes in the cookbooks she recommended or were offended by some of the language in the books that were fictional. There were other reasons given but I didn't career what they were. I was obligated by store policy to take the books back and that was a huge pain in the neck and a costly one. When Oprah tried to wipe out the beef industry I still ate beef and continue to do so to this day. I am not alone. When Oprah told me (and 25 million other viewers) that Dr. Phil was the be-all and end-all when it came to problem solving I watched him for myself and nearly vomited at his conduct. What a charlatan and not even a licensed doctor to boot. Yes, Oprah has power and she certainly has lots of money; but, that doesn't mean that everything that flies out of Oprah's mouth is correct or worthy of life changing conduct. I think it's a shame that she has such power and I pity those who blindly follow whatever she tells them to do. Next, Obama. I didn't want Obama to be President because I did not feel that he had enough experience and I do not agree with his politics. Since he took office that belief has grown. I am positive that I was right in not wanting him to be President and his recent comments about installing a Muslim Mosque near Ground Zero in New York City only reinforces my belief that Obama is a fool and that his leadership is faulty and dangerous. He has made a political topic out of a common sense desire not to offend the American public and those who lost loved ones in the Twin Towers on 9/11. In recent polls 70% of Americans do not want that Mosque built in that spot, yet, Obama sticks to his guns on the topic and has "no regrets" about his foolish and ill-timed remarks.
There are a lot more things I am feeling negative about but this is too long already so I'll save them for another blog on another day. I'm sure that I've angered my fair share of people with this one!!
