Aug. 15, 2010 There has been much controversy over this whole gay marriage thing. From what I see, 7 million Californians voted against it, and one federal judge voted for it. In the land of Obama, this means that it is fair. To the 7 million Californians, to the millions of other Americans who are against this, and to those that are for it, I have a solution. Really. My opinion, (and mine only) is along the lines of “don’t ask, don’t care”. I really could care less. Sorry. I know this is important to some of the gay folks, but I care about this as much as the gay folks probably care whether or not I should plant leeks or sweet corn in my garden next year. And to those who are against it and protested against it. Lighten up. I get it. The world gets it. You all don’t want the gays to have a “marriage”. Let me clue everyone in on a little secret. It ain’t a marriage. Oh, sure, they can call it a marriage. The state can call it a marriage, the feds can call it a marriage, and all those really weird caterers can call it a marriage. Let me explain. Imagine you have neighbors, Ralph and Sam. They own a 1974 Volkswagen. It’s rusted, doesn’t run well, and belches oil from the exhaust. They call it a Lexus. They have Lexus t-shirts, a Lexus keychain, and pay insurance for a “Lexus”. When you walk buy their house and say “howdy” they wave and smile back at you and point out their new “Lexus”. You smile and nod your head, and say something like, “That’s a fine looking Lexus, yesiree!”. Now Doris and Sally, just down the block from Ralph and Sam, they have a Chevy Vega. A beat up, 1975 rusted out Chevy Vega. They call it a Mercedes. They have a Mercedes keychain, A Mercedes hood ornament on the hood of this thing, and matching Mercedes jogging outfits. They pay insurance for a Mercedes and drive it like it is a Mercedes. Heck, you even let them take up two parking spots at the Shop n’ Save so they don’t get a “ding” on their “Merc”. The point is, it isn’t a Lexus, it isn’t a Mercedes. They can call it a Lexus/Mercedes, the state can agree, the federal government can agree, hell, even you and I can look and say, “By golly, that’s a fine Lexus/Mercedes”. But it isn’t. It never was, and it never will be. What they call it isn’t important. What the state and feds call it, isn’t important. The definition goes beyond what the authorities name something. Spiritually, it’ll always be a Vega, a VW. But if it makes them happy to call it something else, then by all means, let them.
It doesn’t hurt you. It makes them happy, and it allows those of us to focus on actual important things, like taxes, deficits, government takeovers, and a corrupt White House.
