Aug. 5, 2010 I never attend movies or watch television, except on those rare occasions when I’m trapped in a place where a television set is going. So I know almost nothing of directors and actors beyond what I see online. I had never even heard of Oliver Stone, for example, until today, when the news broke that he is being castigated and disparaged for some of his remarks. So I looked him up in Wikipedia and read some of the articles that appeared on Yahoo News about him, in which, among other things, he is accused of being anti-Semitic. According to my way of thinking, it doesn’t matter whether or not a person is anti-Semitic, as long as the individual’s opinions are based on fact. For example, it is a fact that the Jewish presence in Israel has caused much turmoil and carnage in the past 60 years. If someone sees this as a justification for being anti-Semitic, that’s understandable. But if the person only heard a rumor that Jews poisoned wells during the Middle Ages, entertaining anti-Semitic feelings on that score, as Jews maintain often happens, she or he would be irrational in the extreme. Some of Stone’s ideas are completely logical, if unfashionable and politically incorrect. For instance, he wonders why the 25 or 30 million Soviets--he says Russians--who died in WWII are not lamented as woefully as the supposed 6 million Jews who perished then. He attributes this to Jewish control of the media, and who would know better that Jews control the media than a Hollywood director, himself half-Jewish? If Jewish control of the media and the possible exaggeration and exploitation of the Holocaust don’t bother you, you’re probably not anti-Semitic. If they bother you, you probably are anti-Semitic. So what? You have not changed the facts. Stone mentions that no one did more to stop the Germans in WWII than Josef Stalin, and that is undoubtedly true, according to the several books I read about the war in both English and Russian. Stalin was still the personification of evil. That fact remains. But it does change the truth of Stalin’s victory over Hitler. Stone takes the US to task for its shabby treatment of Iran. Any objective, impartial person can see the confrontation with Iran is a Zionist project. Iran has not violated the terms of the Nuclear Non-proliferation Treaty but Israel refuses even to join the treaty. Israel has plenty of nuclear weapons but Iran none You don’t have to be an admirer of Mahmoud Ahmadinejad to understand that the US is behaving with Jew-inspired antipathy towards Iran, just as it does with Iraq and Afghanistan. Iran’s malice towards Jews is not half as dangerous as Jews’ malice towards Iran. As for Stone’s attitude towards Fidel Castro and Hugo Chavez, he is probably misguided. I don’t think the lot of the average Venezuelan is improving, as Stone avers. Inflation in Venezuela cannot but weigh upon poor people. Nor has Castro done much to improve the plight of the poor. All in all Stone’s ideas are very insightful. However, it is a fact of life in the US that a public figure may not speak the truth if some influential group doesn’t approve, but he’s at complete liberty to lie, if lies please the group. It's regrettable that, because of this national hypocrisy, someone who tells it as it is, usually has to apologize. Stone also said Ronald Reagan was a dunce. Unfortunately, I didn’t pay much attention to Reagan during his term of office, so I can’t really say, but I was inclined to consider him a dunce also.
