The Age Of Consent

By Jack Briant
Aug. 28, 2010

Today I am 21 years without a drink or a drug, and it feels like just another day. Twenty-one is a benchmark number as it’s the age of consent when drinking becomes legal. There is much to be said about using the same number for everyone. No size fits all in clothes and no one age fits everyone for the responsibility of drinking either.

Most of the population can drink within reasonable limits and not cross that fine line where it becomes problematic. Trouble is knowing just when that line is crossed into the forbidden zone. Those 12 questions that AA asks if you have a problem with alcohol should be instructions for all who begin drinking. It becomes less valuable knowing it’s a problem after it is one than before it becomes one.

There are many instruction manuals for how to lose weight, be eternally happy and cook the perfect meal. There is no instruction manual when it comes to drinking responsibly only the caution to do so. That warning was never included years ago, and it only came into being because of the very strict DWI laws that are in place now. If they weren’t, the public service part of alcoholic ads would still not be advertised as heavily as they are now. Nonetheless, other than the words Drink Responsibly, there is no manual on how many or how much alcohol one can imbibe. Too many variables like a person’s weight, individual tolerance and food intake among other factors prohibit clear cut instructions like red and green lights do.

What is one to do? The easiest solution is not to drink at all. Since alcohol is so ingrained into the psyche of the world population, that solution will never work. There are still so many periodicals including medical journals that say moderate drinking is actually good for your health. This premise it absolutely insane. Reminds me of doctors who used to say that smoking was good for your health as well. Alcohol is about big business and it is too tied into the economic fabric to ever be excluded as an option for those attaining the age of majority. Alcohol is a toxin and a drug is a drug, and simply saying to drink responsibly is routine superficiality at best.

About the author Jack Briant: My writings are personal musings, but they transcend my own individual experience and seek to touch your heart and soul through experiences of your own.

I seem to see life through the lens of metaphors that show up whenever I am moved or connected with the deeper meaning of life in front of me. My style humorous in one layer can move you to tears or have you nodding "yes" as you sidle up to the emotions in you.

My explorations delve into the human condition as it relates to fragmented relationships, blended family challenges and any form of the addictions that plague us.

I won't try to tell you what to do or give you 10 easy steps or even point you in the direction I think you should be headed. Rather it is my wish that you take longer looks at the areas of your life you only gave fleeting glances to.
