Obama's Last Stand?

By Gregory Brooks
Apr. 5, 2010

The glitz and glamour are gone. The tear jerking inspirational speeches have lost all their magic and worn off. Patiently a morose and broken nation still wait for promises made that seem to be blowing in the wind at this point. Now President Obama has to be thinking, will he be around another term to finish what he started? Judging by the way things have gone for him this past year, who would want a second perturb stint in office four more years? But like the old saying goes, “somebody has to do it”.

No doubt this country nor the world for that matter may ever witness another Commander in Chief quite like him again. His valiant efforts to right the wrongs of past Presidents is very admirable. But for every good deed he tries to carry out, there is always a harsh backlash to it. On a personal note I believe there hasn’t been a more better humanitarian representing for the home team to have received the prestigious Nobel Peace Prize.

Public opinion on the other hand, can turn fast on a political figure in a blink of an eye and this is exactly what has happened to Obama. Basically the same people who helped catapult him into office want to see him out in 2013. And what’s quite astonishing is that nearly every race in America; including different age groups and even political parties supported his vision on the quest to the White House. Now Obama’s approval rating has sunk like the Titanic. Here are some very important reasons why. I call them all the Three Headed Monster. They are as follows: The Bailout, The Economy, and the Health Care Bill. This beast has been growing out of control for many years and then all of a sudden it was feeding time! You don’t have to ask who it devoured. And we all better hope it doesn’t want seconds anytime soon. Obama made a very Foolish mistake by sleeping with the enemy, which was seemingly catering to the problem itself. He and his cabinet were under the notion that they could possibly turn things around by orchestrating a massive bailout plan.

The big banks and the major corporations were licking their chops at this proposition because our beloved President had just saved them from an almost sudden financial death. As we already know the banks greedily took the money and headed for the hills. They still aren’t lending like they used to and for some people even with average credit, getting a fair loan is like pulling teeth. Countless financial institutes are still bullying hard working people around by trying to force them to repay debts that are now outrages and ridiculous. In the first place if it weren’t for their sneaky tactics that are upheld by the law, a lot of honest people would probably not be in this crisis to begin with.

The big boy corporations didn’t do any better. They followed one another like monkey see, monkey do by laying workers off but still giving their top executives really fat bonuses. Of course when word got out about their naughty indiscretions to the general public and the President, all hell broke loose! Congress sure did have fun throwing stones at the Chief Executive Officers of these companies. Still the grim fact remains, President Obama let them off the hook. The most humiliating part to this mess is that they laughed all the way to the bank literally and made Saint Obama look like their own personal 14 karat gold ATM machine. Strike one!

Is it just me, or does it seems that everything falls apart in life like a domino effect? One situation crumbles and then another right behind it. The economic collapse has everybody uncertain about their future. The unemployment rate is disastrous all over the United States and has ballooned leaving tens of thousands of Americans jobless each month. The office buzz now days around the water cooler is who will get a pink slip this week and when will it all end? Back when Obama was elected there was an ugly rumor, more of a misconception among the Afro-American community. The idea that because finally a President in which Afro-Americans could identify with, he would some how show more favor to their past and future needs. But like Presidents before him, people of different races have had that same unrealistic thought as well. Society hasn’t grown up enough yet to realize that a President’s duty in office is to serve all Americans.

In Obama’s most recent State of the Union address many would agree that it was solid and reassuring, but I found it to be just another fairytale told to us like our parents did before tucking us off into bed. We should know by now that happy endings are short lived. In his address he indicated that the U.S. economy was beginning to stabilize again and definitely headed in the right direction. Also, there is a new strategy to create more jobs. He even encouraged businesses once again to start hiring and banks to loan credit to help the process. I don’t think they heard him then, and I know they won’t now.

In the mean time jobs are still scarce. Even the small businesses which are the backbone of our economy is struggling to survive. Recently I needed minor repairs done to my car and I knew of a local dealership in the area that’d been around for ever. I’d remember seeing their television ads about a year ago. So I decided to pay them a visit with out calling ahead. To my surprise they’d closed months earlier along with some other small businesses. Now remember all the states received a stimulus mainly to create new jobs as well as help boost their own economy. But if you’re curious like I was to see how your state spent the funds, go to the government website at www.recovery.org. Needless to say I was highly disappointed. Oh yes remember this important footnote, Obama wants all the bailout money to be repaid from the corporate leeches. Good luck, that’s strike two!

Last, the health care issue maybe the most sensitive issue of them all, and it also might be the final straw that breaks the camel’s back. Which could ultimately divide the nation even more. In a perfect world everybody would have affordable health insurance, but unfortunately this ain’t it. Basically Obama and Congress have created a plan that will require people to carry some form of insurance and up the present cost of it slightly. No one likes to be told what to do or forced to do anything, especially we Americans. Also, it neglects the health needs of those who are here illegally by muddling the language in the bill. Like I stated earlier, various races voted for Obama, and no doubt we all have relatives somewhere down the line that haven’t got legal status here in the U.S. And Obama is our hope for a positive solution in helping everyone when it comes to the health care issue even if they are illegal immigrants.

Bottom line the American people are more concerned about their jobs than any health care plan right now. Because with out steady employment, they can’t afford it anyway. Obama has often said in his speeches before and after he took office, “I can’t do it alone, I will need the support of each and every American”. But that just translated into wishful thinking on his part. And because we live in a highly critical society with delusional hypocritical politicians, Obama will always be the number one target while in office. South Carolina Republican Representative, “say it ain’t so” Joe Wilson’s outburst calling him a liar is concrete evidence of this. Not to mention so long as we have the Rush Limbaugh and Glenn Beck nations, the ones who choose to express their freedom of speech to the fullest, believe nice guys always finish last. Obama will clearly have to reinvent himself rather quickly. The person waiting next in line to run for office may need to study Obama’s greatest hits and misses before they step up to the plate.

Of course I hope I’m wrong and President Obama can some how miraculously get to serve the full eight year term. Maybe then he can make historic positive life long changes for all Americans. Set solid guidelines for all to follow and leave a masterful blueprint for future Presidents to continue to uphold in the years to come. But I wouldn’t bet on his return to office though, because the odds in Vegas are stacked heavily against him. Strike three and he’s out!
