Sept. 25, 2009 You could ask who is Linda McMahon and what does she want from the Congress of the United States. Well, truth be told, the answer really is fairly simple. Linda McMahon is the former head of the World Wrestling empire, who has just stepped down from that job to run her own political campaign and what she plans to do is sit in the U.S. Senate in place of Christopher Dodd, the long time incumbent. This, of course, is interesting for several reasons. First, it shows a lot of ambition. There are a lot of rich Americans so having a lot of money does not automatically become a qualification for high office, although it makes the possibility of a credible run that much more possible. Pay for staff, buy ads, you have a campaign. The game, of course, is to garner votes and will office. So because Linda McMahon is rich, she will be able to run a believable campaign. The WWE, of which she owns a big piece, is worth millions and, if that wasn't shocking enough, she can probably use some of that filthy lucre to show she is serious about her big interest in politics. Imagine her renting meeting places and even visiting hospitals, nursing homes and wherever she can pitch her tent in the great state of Connecticut and working the audience into a frenzy of patriotism or whatever else hits her very well heeled fancy. I can see it now. Wresting stars and other WWE employees, either paid or volunteers, all in compliance with state and federal law, getting the crowd worked up about the issues of our day. Whatever Linda McMahon wants to get them yelling and screaming about. Better than a wrestling match, this would be national politics at a fever pitch in the same state that almost sent Joe Lieberman home because of the brutal attacks by Ned Lamont, peace maven, who wanted to run in the face of explosions and gun fire and almost won except that George Dubya Bush, the incumbent President, wasn't going to make nice with war support on the line, resulting in Lamont having to face Lieberman after the Democratic primary in an immediate voter rematch and good Ole Joltin Joe turned the political tables and came up with the most votes on election day. Winning his old seat and keeping his old job. To this very day and, all the while supporting the troops, who we need to defend Peace in Our Time and Democracy all over the world. So Linda McMahon is entering a state race with what would be a breath of fresh life for some weather beaten issues. It should be some show. She probably has wrestlers working for her who care and know a thing or two about the real issues and can say their piece in front of a paying crowd or local community group or just a mere gathering of living voters and could probably carry the day, wouldn't you think? Of course, Linda McMahon still has to run a credible campaign and make speeches and present answers to issues, but that would seem to be small change from where she is coming from. It's probably easier than shouting for two hours at the top of your lungs, beating your chest and bouncing off the ring ropes to keep from coming too close to the screaming crowd. With this in mind, I am not sure her actual positions on the real issues are going to count as much as the actual campaign, which should be lively and memorable for its get out the vote action. Another blast from the past, Steve Forbes, probably could learn something from this, although it is my understanding his campaign probably helped the family business, Forbes wouldn't you know, make some extra money. The slogan I am thinking of is hear the Forbes name, buy the Forbes magazine, read the Forbes wisdom, although what's good for the WWE may not be the major issue driving Linda McMahon's run for the big house. Still you never can tell when it comes to wrestling or other forms of close combat these days. I'm willing to bet some of those big, strong, attractive wrestlers care about more than getting in your face on Friday or Monday or any other night. There are probably a lot of patriots among the crew, not to mention respectable military veterans. Look at them now. Working the crowd. Getting the voters riled up enough to come out to the local poling place and vote for who else? Linda McMahon, big time politician. This could be the smack down coming to your local political arena in 2010. After all, there is the example of Joe Lieberman's last Senate campaign where party did not matter, although smacking down Ned Lamont did count big time on Election Day.
As that famous announcer keeps telling us, "Let's get ready to rumble."
