Eliot Spitzer, The Sheriff Of Wall Street, Is Bored! So Is He Still Wearing Black Socks?

By Neil Levine
Sept. 24, 2009

Eliot Spitzer appears interested in making a political come back. Apparently, going from political outsider and nonentity to the big cheese he once was, riding roughshod over those he saw as standing in the way of his steam roller, certainly has a lot of appeal to him, especially in comparison to what he currently is doing, which it seems might include working for his father, writing for Slate Magazine and teaching at CUNY or not, depending on what you know and what you believe. Private sector jobs merely to make money just are not nearly enough.

My view is that this is a golden opportunity to make more rich people such as Bernard Spitzer, Barry Barack Hussein Obama, Nancy Pelosi and, yes, Charlie Rangel poor. Why wait? Let the Sheriff of Wall Street help pass a special tax on politically protected elite millionaires who appear to have failed miserably at giving the money away or whatever diversionary capital game they would like to play on the public, especially Eliot Spitzer since he seems to have so much time on his hands to do his thing. Even though his father has not done well giving away the family fortune away through his charitable organization, why shouldn't his son, Eliot, show everyone how to do it? Why wait? Now is the time to be poor like everyone else. There is so much to take and so little time to take it in. Shaking down the property owners can be so much fun, why not start with someone who not only is eligible but also has indicated he is so very, very willing and has experience at such highly charged activities.

Sheriff Spitzer has even given pleasant interviews seeking to boost his standing as an expert on current events, public affairs and all other sorts of things so very interesting to willing communications contacts. So much so that perhaps inside media mavens should be telling everyone why or what good would a comeback by the Sheriff of Wall Street would be to anyone and everyone.

After all, there is still the ethics scandal puzzling Albany. How can they give off the appearance of probity and uprightness when there are so many questions about honesty and morality to be asked and answered. How could the state police be misused so sinisterly? How can lying and refusing to answer pertinent questions by diligent prosecutors be so widespread? Isn't such nefarious conduct supposed to be severely punished so the malefactors will never perpetrate their heinous conduct again? Why is there no checks and balances on scheming and personal dishonesty when the public prefers to look up to its state leaders. How did the state government get into such an embarrassing predicament? Isn't this a howdy do to quite a big pickle? Will the questions raised ever be answered or will this scandal, too, be buried like a pair of dirty black socks in the tabloid trash heap of history?

Worse, will all the scandal eventually be swept under the rug to protect the guilty and shield the voters from further embarrassing revelations? Better yet, who was responsible and how can all this nonsense be prevented from ever, ever occurring again? Why should scheming politicians be protected from untoward revelations when all they appear to be interested in are schemes to muscle in on ambitious property owners and separate them from their hard earned money.

Then there is Poor Ashley Dupre. Imagine an embarrassing encounter between her and the Sheriff of Wall Street. What could he say? I love you? What could he do? How about apologizing for giving the public the business? That would be a good one and an even better start. This would certainly be an excellent place to begin shaking down property owners who do not confess or know the error of their ways.

Powerful Sheldon Silver has already weighed in with a no. That's a good start, but where is he on Charlie Rangel and his problems and how that might impact the ethics debate before the state legislature? Will this protect anyone from anything and bring truth, justice and the American Way riding back to the silver screen once again?

I think the rumors of Eliot Spitzer's return show the weaknesses of a fawning media seeking to fan the flames of political excitement in a controversy charged world. I think it shows short sightedness and a willingness to fawn or a political matinee idol who has been exposed as a uncured ham.

Why is an honest politician so hard to find? Are they an endangered species? Why isn't honesty its own reward in politics? For further penetrating questions, let me assure you you don't have to look very far. In fact, I am sure you can think of some of your own. Just give it a thought or two. Seriously.
