Obama's Speech To Students - History In The Making

By Julia Sherman
Sept. 4, 2009

History in the Making

As a teacher of culture studies and a humanities student myself I was dumbfounded by so many teachers refusal to watch his speech.

Some of the excuses were the need to keep on content for passing tests its not important and students can watch at home, following curriculum is more important.

WAKE UP people. The comments and attitude reminded me of Professor Umbrage in Harry Potter when she used archaic books for students to pass exams.

Basically what the current teachers are doing is keeping a blind eye to Civics and modern history.

Ladies and gentlemen, we are living History. What we do today will be in history books in 25 years.

And what will that curriculum be discussing, why his speech to students was banned in some places, refused and blacked.

School is the perfect place to discuss. Learn and build opinions and learn to debate, and hold our own line as to what we think. Its is the grooming ground for our future.

So when I hear that teachers that I know are not going to watch it or allow their students to watch it, I get disgusted.

We have become a nation of non-thinkers. If someone says don’t do it we don’t. Umnnnnnn isn’t that what you were all saying as to being communistic. If the school principal says no then its no. Uh hello that’s communism oppression.

Being a Civics, Social Studies, Culture Studies teacher or more for the fact a teacher in general it is our duty, our responsibility to change direction and learn and teach.

What even more angers me is how can they even consider that this is not civics, it’s creating a cult personality"

Paragraph 6)

And yet they think nothing of discussing celebrity nonsense in school as important. Their favorite political or party is also a cult. Everything is a cult following of one form or another. Even the teachers own religion on the very s basic concept is a cult so is their loyalty to a school sports team. But it easier to see that as different.

Imagine if you will what would have happened during the Civil war if teachers had the ability as they do now with communication variety, to say no we are not going to listen to Lincoln speech? Or for that matter what about Roosevelt? How many of these teachers were glued to the TV when Nixon resigned?

I for one watched every Space walk, every Watergate event, 9/11 news cast etc. I even watched President Teddy Roosevelt on You Tube, President Roosevelt (FDR) and Mrs. Roosevelt during the depression, their speeches were mesmerizing and inspiring.

HISTORY, people is what President Obama is making. I am for any President who steps up to the plate and takes a swing at issues and tries to get the people going in a positive direction. We look up to the past presidents who did just that.

It is our duty as educators, leaders and instructors to allow the viewing of such an event, have the students discuss what was said and have them debate their won views and impressions. And what makes it even more important is his education department created a lesson plan. No side stepping and no having to wing it. Or is this, the discussion, challenge of the teachers own ideas and having students be articulate and adult about things , is this what scares a teacher the most?

Our students of today are our own future. Think about that for a moment. Do you really want the generation that is going to take care of you in your old age to be kept in the dark? Be un-articulate, be uninformed, and be resentful that they could not be part of history?

And honestly, what is one day of a speech going to do to disrupt the curriculum, when this will be part of the curriculum of the future? Or is it that some teachers are afraid to change gears for a moment?

Ahhhhhh that’s is, they are afraid to change gears and perhaps have their thoughts challenged and disrupted. Any change, like a dog with issues is upsetting and panic attack ridden.

I am going to allow my students to log on during class to watch and discuss what is happening.

I for one would like to openly thank my teachers at the high school, elementary, jr high and university I attended.

To: Mr. Schwertfager, Mr. Stallman, Mr. Sullivan, Mr. Lenehan, Mrs Catnezarro, Mr. Bazlinzski, Mrs. Edleman, Rabbi Maza, Mrs. Greene, Mrs. Eison, Mr. DeMont, Rabbi Wartenberg, Mrs Wolf (my third, grade teacher who thought outside the box and was a hands on teacher) My Professors at DePaul, WGU and my parents.

Thank you all for being the people who taught me to think for myself.
