Obama Should Repeat History

By Alexey Braguine
Oct. 13, 2009

President Obama’s stated objective for continuing the war in Afghanistan is to prevent the Taliban from providing a safe heaven for Al Qaida from where it could launch attacks on the U.S..

Although stated goals by politicians and diplomats are always suspect, let’s give the new Nobel Laureate the benefit of the doubt.

The problem Obama faces is that he does not have the resources for winning the war by brute force.

Can this war be won?

In my not so humble opinion, the answer is yes. Since the war theater is in Asia and the stated enemy is Asian one must use Asian subtlety to win. Let the enemy defeat himself.

In 2001, after a series of outrageous acts by Afghanistan’s Taliban rulers, the U.S. sent a small military force into the country. With imaginative daring, in some cases on horseback, the American forces easily overthrew the Taliban and were greeted like heroes by the Afghan population.

What can be learned from this historical lesson?

Do it again! This is a great opportunity to repeat history.

According to Obama’s stated purpose, the U.S. doesn’t care who rules in Kabul, whether it is Karzai, Abdulah Abdulah, Mullah Omar or Melvin Koznovsky. So, the U.S. and NATO forces should begin maneuvering for victory,

Stage One: Withdraw from Afghanistan. Too bad relations with Iran are not very good. It would have been terribly convenient to just move across the border to Iran where the U’S; Army could still enjoy desert sands without having pesky Afghans do their resistance to foreign occupation act. But since very few troops are needed for the final act, most units can return to the States.

Let’s assume that the Taliban reaction will be to retake Kabul and re-establish themselves as the rulers of the eastern and southern parts of Afghanistan. The tribes in disagreement with the Taliban will then rise in rebellion.

The U.S; can stand aside and watch the fun. This is called geopolitical judo. Let the enemy stumble all over himself.

Meanwhile, the Taliban government will have to surface from the underground. Governors, police, military commanders will operate in the open. U.S. intelligence will finally know who the enemy is.

Before the U.S. invasion, American intelligence knew where Osama Bin Ladin lived. It was a large compound with housing units scattered about. The CIA knew where each of his wives lived. It didn’t know with which one he would spend the night. So, at least one assassination attempt failed by hitting the wrong house..

If Osama was to return to Afghanistan, U.S. intelligence would know it. And he would be easy to track down. A commando raid would be enough to bundle Osama off to a Federal jail in New York, or the World Court in The Hague and try him for crimes against humanity.

If Bin Ladin continues hiding wherever he is, we are wasting time and money, never mind exposing American and European young men to premature deaths--In the wrong place.
