Oct. 4, 2009 I have noticed that conservatives are even less tolerant of liberal viewpoints since the election of President Obama. As long as conservatives were in control of political power, their media outlets would permit expression of liberal opinions. But now, many of these outlets seem intent on completely censoring the left. The Augusta Chronicle, the daily newspaper monopoly of the central Savannah River area in Georgia, banned me from their message boards and will not publish letters I submit that are critical of their editorial page. While they silence me, Michael Ryan, the editorial page editor of the Chronicle, continues to write ridiculous lies, and plagiarizes conservative talking points in the unsigned commentary that appears on their editorial page everyday. On The Augusta Chronicle message board I maintained a thread entitled "The Michael Ryan Watch," that exposed his falsehoods and plagiarisms. The thread lasted for a couple of months, but they banned me and expunged the thread. When I sent in a letter to the paper clearly showing that Mr. Ryan copied a false claim from a chain e-mail in one of his columns, they refused to publish it. I asked why, and someone from their editorial department made the laughable claim that "they couldn't confirm the accuracy of what I wrote." Everybody that's ever read the editorial page of a newspaper knows that opinions expressed, whether conservative or liberal, are oftentimes highly inaccurate. Accuracy has never been a requirement for publication on an editorial page. The Augusta Chronicle, though like many other newspapers is headed for bankruptcy, has a daily circulation of about 60,000 people. Of the people who buy the paper, probably only about 10% read the editorial page. Mr. Ryan is warping the minds of 6,000 people with his absurd lies which are easily proven false. If these readers understood that Mr. Ryan plagiarized a good bit of his material from the likes of Glen Beck, chain e-mails, and The Drudge Report, his credibility would be tarnished as it should be. I resorted to starting a blog entitled, "The Michael Ryan Watch," to replace my thread which the administrator on their message board made disappear. On a whim I used townhall.com, a conservative oriented website. My first entries were picked up by internet search engines, but alas, as soon as the folks at townhall.com discovered I was a liberal, and not a conservative, they took down my blog and blocked me from writing on it--another example of conservative intolerance.
I now post "The Michael Ryan Watch" on a free blog http://markgelbart.blogspot.com So far it hasn't been picked up by internet search engines. Although I can never hope to match The Augusta Chronicle's readership, I can at least have this information publicly available for the curious researcher. The purpose of my blog is to provide a critical review of the content of the Chronicle's editorial page. So far, it hasn't been picked up by internet search engines. I'm going to begin networking my blog by submitting this article to U-K, where many of my articles are visible on internet searches. I still get e-mails from people upset or agreeing with something I wrote years ago that I'd forgotten about. Thanks U-K.
