Wee Willie Thompson Is Trying To Beat Mike The Mayor

By Neil Levine
Oct. 3, 2009

Wee Willie Thompson, political insider, machine veteran, controller without control, wants to be mayor of New York City. Unfortunately, for him, he has a massive obstacle blocking his career path. It is called the current incumbent in City Hall, Mike The Mayor himself, the two term, resident of the Upper East Side, seeking a third dip at the fount of public dispensation, incumbent, running an all out media blitz with massive emailings and get out the vote efforts and anything else his money can buy or his staff can think up.

The big immediate hurdle for Wee Willie Thompson is that Mike The Mayor with all that money is a big spender. Not only on City finances, but also on everything else including campaign largess, staff, political ads, messages and all that kind of thing making him hard to beat. Any issue worth its votes can get the good Mayor's considerable attention. If Wee Willie makes a speech, Mike has an event and ads, lots of them, counter punching big time at Wee Willie's latest political jab.

Wee Willie is being outspent by a factor of several to one, making it hard to get his political points to stick. He makes some claim, big or small, and Mike the Mayor responds to overwhelm him.

One issue is education where Mike The Mayor has the benefit of the No Child Left Behind Law and his putting the schools under Mayoral control so he abolished the old Board of Education, put all his bureaucrats in the newly refurbished Tammany Court House, abolished district offices and put more education officials in the schools, at the same time increasing the number of schools and probably getting more kids to actually read something.

This has Wee Willie playing I can do this even though he hasn't and isn't likely to do so as he plays to the Tammany crowd not looking for the golden rule or golden lining or golden parachute or pot of gold at the end of the rainbow either. They may be looking for Wee Willie to give them a golden nod, something he would gladly do, if only he could get his mojo going. Something he has not been able to do given Mike The Mayor's considerable clout.

Wee Willie says this is not fair and it isn't. It is a lot of work and costs a lot of money and always will. What's wrong with reading, writing and arithmetic anyway? especially for kids getting an education and learning the ropes of the cold, cruel world they are going to end up in eventually.

Then there is crime. Mike The Mayor says he is against it and wants to fight it and reduce it. Wee Willie doesn't have much to say for or about crime yet. Except he thinks Mike The Mayor's money is a crime and he would like to make him poor. Basically, if you don't have it, money is a crime and should be outlawed. Wee Willie would do this, too, if he had his way, eventually but time is drawing short and Election Day is fast drawing near. Will Wee Willie Thompson fight crime or simply ignore it? Your guess is as good as mine on this hot button issue.

Finally, there is economics where the Controller is supposed to have a say, although when it comes to making political hay Wee Willie has been mostly quiet. New York City has big spending and wasteful politicians and all Wee Willie can say is that he conducted audits saving a couple of million. Come on. There is more patronage in New York than the politicians have full time or money to fully fund all of it. Take transportation. All the current crew do is spend and spend and spend, not to raise money mind you, apparently spending for the sake of spending to extend the franchise. No wonder the fare is so high.

Anyone worth his political oats would make hay or at least throw salt at all the waste. Not Wee Willie Thompson. He has had eight years to be quiet and has done so to a tee. Now he is quietly claiming that he is going to watch the waste. Come on. Can you believe it?

Mike the Mayor is feeling so confident the way things are going he is promising to automate parking and computerize all the inconvenience, something the tech savvy Mayor makes sound plausible. Wee Willie is having a hard time figuring out what the good Mayor is talking about, let alone a plausible response.

So where does it all end? Hopefully, on Election Day. With more politicians who understand the concept of a budget and making good use of tax payer's money. You never know. New York might somehow avoid bigger and better taxes. Probably not with the current crew and probably not with Wee Willie Thompson in charge of bigger and better spending.
