Oct. 1, 2009 Nine eleven was eight long years ago. Memories of the horrific events are fading, despite annual memorials that are televised and despite the egregious toll of American and other victims' lives at the World Trade Center and on the terrorist hijacked planes, and even though, as a consequence, this country has subsequently entered wars in two distant countries, Iraq and Afghanistan, and is very heavily involved in the security events in Pakistan, apparently the criminal minds that smote this land harshly sorely want to whack us again and again AND yet again. Intriguingly, this sour turn against peace and quiet says a lot about the complicated nature of national defense and international relations and has even deeper implications for long term peace. If you will recall, none of the accused hijackers were strongly tied to much in Iraq or Afghanistan, with their homelands originally being listed as Saudi Arabia, Lebanon, the United Arab Emirates and even Egypt, all countries that are considered friendly and peaceful and with which this country has essentially good relations, with minor exceptions such as worries about who is going to succeed the long serving Hosni Mubarak in Egypt. Although the alleged mastermind of the provocative and antagonistic attack, Osama bin Laden, was supposed to have found protection and been provided a haven for his operations by the then Afghan powers that be, The Taliban, while the then king pin in Iraq, Saddam Hussein, had already been defeated once before in Desert Storm, the War to liberate conquered Kuwait, a decent enough sheikdom on the Persian Gulf. Still, Saddam was making a mockery of sanctions that were supposed to punish him and limit his malign influence and simultaneously engaging in no end of cynical corruption that fundamentally undermined efforts to reign him in. Fast forward, Kuwait is free and basically peaceful. So are Saudi Arabia, Lebanon, the UAE and even Egypt, of course, while large numbers of NATO troops are engaged in both Iraq and Afghanistan, presumably to insure some sort of reasonable long term peace, while, at the very same time, no end of IEDS, that is, bombs, bombs, bombs keep exploding in Iraq and Afghanistan. Setting up a scary scenario, something like a horror movie, that seems to have no end to the senseless murders and horrific maimings, all in the name of power, power for strong men who do not stand up for themselves or anything meaningful or holy or worth mentioning. But still, who want everyone to know they should be afraid, afraid, for they are scary, like monsters in horror movies, in the same senseless way and probably for no other reason. So will violence prone revolts end up in a just peace? Probably only when they end. That is to say, someone has to stop the violence, somehow, some way, every where. Going forward, what is to prevent the insurgents, once they have consolidated their gains and shored up their resources, and outlasted doubters and peace lovers from further attacks. After all, events leading up to the current war included attacks on embassies, ships and even other American land marks. These are people who have made it perfectly clear they want to whip your heimie and WORSE, much worse. Apparently, there are people enjoy pain and suffering. If that is what they want like they want it so badly perhaps they should be given what they want. Pain for the painful. Suffering for the miserable. Whack a do, whack a do, whack a do. Simple solution to a tough problem really. On the other hand, those who want to be miserable and deserve to be miserable still have to be clearly identified. Those taking up arms because they really want to kill to fill their ultra macho fantasies of heaven and more probably deserve what they get. They don't seem to want to stop with peace on Earth , good will towards all men and women, no sir. They seem to like violence for the sake of violence like masochists lusting for some more strong thrills. So, in the end, the best course would seem to be to to give them a dose of the blood curdling thrills they lust for while enduring until they get tired of cutting off arms and legs or they can be stopped. Cold in their tracks. No other solution is probably going to work. The Good Book, the Bible, does mention an eye for an eye as well as turning the other cheek. Sadly, it would appear that hypocrisy, sadism, jealousy, corruption and worse know no bounds. The spirit of the warlord will endure until he is too sick and tired to soldier on and be ready to retire, hopefully, for good. Historically, the world has been a violent place and hiding your head in the sand does not stop the violence. It only allows some sadistic caliph to whip your Heimie.
Only a good policy will do that and when that policy comes American politicians will be very, very proud to announce it. Let me tell you.
