Oct. 29, 2009 It was overcast and mild as the truck drove through the countryside. It was a big orange cab carrying a load of refrigerated strawberries. The woman and the man were married and carried these loads up and down the coastal freeways a few times a year. As the rain came it was in big drops and it was warm, the windshield wipers wiping the water and it all made a comforting swishing sound. There was static over the CB as someone with the handle of Small Fry asked someone else what their 40 was, which was a CB communication designation asking for a location. The rain came heavier and from the outside the lights looked beautiful on the truck, lights like Christmas lights somehow, though they were all orange. Someone’s engine backfired but it couldn’t be heard in the rain. The lady in the truck was talking about her dream and she continued “…and the birds, so many little birds where everywhere, and it was important that I save these birds, and I saved many of them, but then couldn’t get into your mother’s house because it was locked, and I was trying to get into there, and I was worried about the birds…” and at the exact moment that the woman truck driver said ‘birds’ they both noticed through the rain and fog a canvas sign that hung from the side of a large building across a field, and the building was under construction, which made the fact that there was a sign even stranger. The sign said BIRDS in huge black block letters. The sign was at least a story tall, and twenty feet wide. The man started with, “Did you see th…” and the woman politely interrupted saying that she had. The truck continued along and in the distance over another field the wind blew dirt and leaves upwards and all about. ------------ About the Author: For more of Brian's short stories, visit his website: http://www.freewebs.com/storyandstory/.
